Guest guest
Hi Ken, How are you? I gave the fairlite site to the schools for education information. I also suggested that they buy Teaching the Tiger. I also make sure that they understand that they may call to consult with me at any time, day or night. take care, wendy in canada
Guest guest
Hi Ken, I found that I have to figure out what accomadations my (11 yr old) daughter needs and then put them in writing for the 504 plan. I figure this out by spending some time in her class, talking to her teacher, knowing what she's like at home etc.. Not every OCDer has the same symptoms and even the symptoms they do have wax and wane so there isn't any " one size fits all " set of accomadations. Guest guest
Hi ken, I also gave the link http://www.fairlite.com/ocd/articles/school.shtml to the school. I just talked to our superintendent who said that 504 plan is something between you and the school team. Whatever you determine is possible. There is no " you can do... " or " you can not do... " 's. As long as the agreement is reasonable, anything can be included. I think the 504 plan is a federal plan instead of the district plan. Guest guest
Hi, Everyone............Maureen.......it's not about my parish, it's about the schools. My church is great......Gareth and I took the gifts up again today and we are always at donut Sundays, etc. People are very polite and make it a point to congratulate him when he takes the gifts up. I wanted him in the Catholic school system and Sr. Helen (Super. of schools for Dio.of Joliet) personally wrote me and told me that they don't accept special needs kids. They won't even try. Enough about schools. Glad you got the official dx. for . We do need to get together one of these days. How long does it take for you to get to Kankakee? Guest guest
Hi Jane, Welcome Back! I'm glad you and the family enjoyed your vacation to Florida. It was nice to hear that handled all the extra walking and everything, with no problems. Must have been nice to get away from the cooler weather for a while and enjoy the sunshine. Wow! what an appetite I've almost forgotten what that's like, since Josh has been on the lowered dose of prednisone. He actually lost two pounds in the past month but he still looks a bit chubby, since he hasn't had an increase in his height yet. Thanks for sharing your story about the school PE teacher. I guess it's not uncommon for our children to have these kinds of issues at school and it's something we parents may need to be more diligent about. People that move here think that we are so backwards still. I guess I only can judge from what I have seen. I see here that the only kids in a contained room are there for a good reason. It's very obvious that they could not function in a regular class. I don't know, and try to keep an open mind, but some of the things they do just don't make any sense to me. I didn't mean to imply that is what you were saying. I know you better!! ;-) If Maddie were remotely doing what Gareth was, I'd push for it too. But like you said, it's what works for each individual child. I have to say though, that I think it's harder in a way, when you have a child who is able to read, write and do academic work. The whole world is so inclined to ignore their skills because of their autism. Maddie has so many other rudimentary issues, that the pressure is of a different kind. Yes, it's still incredibly hard, but it's more like trying to open a door, whereas with kids like Gareth, it's like trying to keep others from shutting it. I may be way off, but that's my take. Margaret dear, you did not put your foot in your mouth!!! You're among *family* here and can say what you want!!! {{{{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}}} hon!!!! Hi Margaret, I don't think any other school in this district would be better. I don't think it is the principal as much as the teachers. The principal is a whimp when it comes to the teachers or woman in general. He hates conflict and will play both sides. A few years ago I was so mad at him I called him a balless wonder, whoops. I think the shoe fit. If he would just take a stance and tell the teachers to follow the IEP life would be ok. He has caused most of the problems by not being a good administrator. My grandchildren go to another school down the road and my son has had his share with nonsense too. My granddaughter is in the gifted program they were not allowing the kids to use the restroom only at certain designated times. My granddaughter was constantly suffering from bladder infections and they couldn't understand why. The ped started to question her on use of the restroom at school. My son started sending notes to the principal and teacher that were ignored. He ended up going to the superintendant before he got results. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 9 DS/OCD ? Oh Charlyne, I-yai yai, excuse that semi slang Spanish. It just seems its a never- ending battle. So many hugs that all will work out for ya'll. If this is what you want for Zeb to stay at that school district, then continue and keep educating them. Not that I have the right to command here, hee hee. I know you'll do good, why start all over with another school district. This is almost like buying a used car with somebody elses problem or someones relationship gets messed up and then jumps into another relationship when the last one had not been settled. If I had been in your shoes, I would continue to find answers but I would of left the home school at the end of my list. As I do not know what patience is anymore. I just hate to see wasted time and education. When is school over for Zeb and what plans are for the summer? Better get to work, not looking forward to going as I might have to have some strength to finally tell my boss, I'll be quitting, then I'll be a stay home mom again. Hate that word, quitting. We shall see, though. Irma,13,DS/ASD

Guest guest
Charlene, I am . I have two autistic children aged 9 & 7. When the 9 year old was 5 we were living in Florida. We were offered one hour per week of speech therapy... but declined it as we already knew that the speech therapist hated our child (she made that clear the year before at a different school). I believe that she is still receiving one, maybe two hours per week in elementary school in Provo, UT. The real answer? Not nearly enough. In Florida if the child can walk from his desk to the door he does not need PT; OT was about an hour or half an hour per week when Sherman started kindergarten here in Provo. Does that help at all? Guest guest
We live in Scappoose, Oregon (30 minutes from Portland). When my daughter was in ECSE preschool she went 5 days a week. Four of those days she had one hour of 1:1, followed by 2.5 hours of preschool, on wednesdays she had 2 hours of 1:1 at the same school. She had 20 minutes of individual speech per week in the classroom and attended two group language classes per week in addition (these classes were with the same ST at a different site and were 1.5 hours in length each- I credit this with a lot of her improvement). She also had group/individual OT for 30 minutes, twice per week, and I had two home visits with her teacher per month. This works out to about 20 hours a week. We were very happy with the services available for the ESCE kids (3-5). My daughter went for one year and was 4 when she started and 5 when she left. I now homeschool- though we were offered a pretty good placement for kindy. HTH, Deanna in Oregon
Guest guest
Hello, Charlene !! We live in Columbus OH. My daughter just turned 4yrs old. For the past 2yrs, she has been going to school for 4 days/week 2 1/2hrs/day. Outside of getting speech & ot at school (its realy hard to calculate how much she gets at school), we receive an additional 6hrs of speech & ot. Hope this helps -- schools I would like to know of all of you out there who have children ages 3 to 5, what school hours and how many hours of OT , speech and PT does your autistic child receive? Guest guest
My daughter, Cristina, is 3 years old and has ASD. She is currently receiving OT 3 times a week and speech twice a week. This is paid for with her Medicaid as there is a 2-3 year wait in Florida right now for services through the state. Crazy, huh? She should be in school but the supposed *only* option our county's public school system had was unacceptable to me for many reasons which I won't bore you with right now. So I have decided to keep her home until the new school year starts when she will be going to a charter school for autistic children. Incidentally, my NT 4-year old daughter (who will be 5 when the school year starts) will be going to that school as well since they have something called " reverse inclusion " . We aren't sure yet how long we'll send her there yet, guess we'll have to see how it goes. Okay, I've rambled long enough. LOL Hope this answers your question. ~Amy mamaznutz@...
