Guest guest
You might want to check out The Gateway Academy (http://www.thegatewayacademy.org/) or The Monarch School (http://www.monarchschool.org/). There is also The School which goes through 8th grade (http://www.theharrisschool.com), The New School in the Heights (http://www.thenetworkschool.com/Website2_files/page0001.htm), River Oaks Academy (www.riveroaksacademy.com), Trafton Academy (http://www.trafton.org/mission.htm), and Wesley Academy (http://www.wesleyacademy.net/). Good luck!

Guest guest
We moved from new Orleans in 1999. I lived in that area all of my life. Where are you?About monarch. I do know hear your concern about academics. My son was not even capable of doing school work. For years he worked on regulation, social communication, and sensory integration issues. Without monarch, he would be in jail while now he can calmly participate in class and do class work. At first his school work was secondary. Now that he has come so far, he is making much more progress academically. He seems to have made up a year of skills in the last semester. But all the book knowledge in the world doesn't help him function in the world if he cannot relate to others. So we were never faced with him needing more challenge academically. I do remember when I first toured the school I was impressed that they were teaching an AP class. The great thing is that if that is what your child needs that is where he learns. And they are preparing children for college in many different ways depending on the child. I hope that helps. . Colleen -- Schools Hi,We are from southern Louisiana and are considering a move to Texas or, actually, wherever we can find a good school for our son . He is 11 years old and has been attending a private school with a full-time shadow. He has an autism diagnosis but has some great strengths (music and math) and deficits (social and language, specifically reading comprehension). We've done a lot of different types of therapy but our main focus now is the school setting and social deficits. From reading the emails in this group, I am very hopeful about the services Texas has generally. Does anyone know of a good private school or public school district????ThanksColleen

Guest guest
I'll just chime in about Monarch. They are an amazing school. I was told by someone in the office, that the kids usually only go there for a couple of years, then their parents will transfer them out to a fully functioning private school. Westview is supposed to be awesome too. Briarwood is also another major autism school here. Also, there is a list of schools on Texas Children's site that I am also including a link for. http://www.westviewschool.org/ http://www.briarwoodschool.org/about_us/aboutus.html http://www.thehorizonschooltx.com/thehorizonschool/Home.html http://www.texaschildrens.org/Parents/TipsArticles/ArticleDisplay.aspx?aid=1572 > > Where in south Louisiana did you move from? > We looked at Monarch because I really like the RDI program, but I just didn > t get a good feel about where Monarch is academically. > Colleen > > -- Schools > > > Hi, > We are from southern Louisiana and are considering a move to Texas or, > actually, wherever we can find a good school for our son . Guest guest
In SA Northside ISD use to be pretty good and developed a program called the Nellie Reddex Center. It has been years since I have worked with them but they may be a good place to look at. Guest guest
Does anyone know of any schools in or around the Austin, Texas area for those on the spectrum? Or, of anyone online schools for those on the spectrum? Thanks in advance. Debbie Faith never wonders why. Worry about nothing, pray about everything! Guest guest
There's Odyssey School, which I've heard good things about. We were privately seeing one of the founders of the school for one-on-one behavioral therapy at one point. It's not just for Aspergers, but other diagnoses too like ADHD, OCD, etc... You have to apply to enter and meet certain academic requirements b/c they only take average to above average intelligence kids. Through Austin ISD, there is a program called SCORES that exists in many of the school campuses which is a support program exclusively for kids on the autism spectrum. I will not say that one-size-fits-all for these programs, though. If you contact the Special Education office for Austin ISD, you can learn more.
