Guest guest
My son is 8 1/2 and about 95 lbs and he takes 2mg of intuniv in the morning .. along w/20mg vyvanse. We saw results with the intuniv almost immediately in terms of a reduction in outbursts and tantrum like behaviors ... he's become much more pliable. > > Hello, > > My 7 year old son was put on Abilify a month ago for his aggression. He's only had 1 major aggressive melt down since he started the medication, so I believe it's working. We just met w/his neurologist and talked about bringing down the Abilify dosage and starting him on Intuniv. I haven't found a lot of information on Intuniv, so I thought I'd ask this group about it. Has anyone dealt with this medication? Guest guest
We tried Intuniv for over a month at 3mg (titrated up from 1mg a week at a time). It seemed to make the tics go away, both the motor and the vocal. Other than that - I don't see any difference in him (OCD/ADHD/ASD). Our Psych gave us a 'sample' pack to give him " as needed " if the tics come back, but even with insurance it was going to be $95 a month! All it is is long acting Guanfacine - I can get regular Guanfacine on the $4 program at walmart. For my wallet, my son can take that twice a day for $4 a month instead of the fancy long acting stuff once a day for $95. But, no odd side effects, no weird weight gain or night terrors. He did have more trouble sleeping if we gave it at bed time, though I have no idea why. > > Hello, > > My 7 year old son was put on Abilify a month ago for his aggression. Guest guest
My son just started Intuniv last weekend. It was initially a blood pressure medication but docs use it for depression and adhd. It is a good ADHD med for kids with AS because it doesn't have the risk of tics developing like typical ADHD meds. is doing so much better in so many ways. His impulse control is much better. He seems more interested in people and interaction now and less interested in computers. He's always been very friendly but if a computer was in the room that would take all of his attention even if he wasn't actually using it. Today he stopped playing a computer game to go play with his dog. He keeps asking his sister to do things with him. " Let's do something together. " He mentioned swimming as something he'd like to do. He's doing much better at paying attention in school and his willingness to work has increased. I hope it keeps working this way because everyone is seeing these huge changes. So far no side effects. > > Hello, > > My 7 year old son was put on Abilify a month ago for his aggression. Guest guest
We used it for about two months. We "think" we noticed a difference but we were hoping for something to work. Started with 1mg then upped to 2mg. At the beginning it made him very sleepy - napping after school then he got headaches with 2mg. We have started Lexapro for anxiety which has so far been the best thing. We are still in the honeymoon phase and hoping it works! Loved that Intuniv was a non-stimulant. Guest guest
We are currently working with it, but I'm not sure how long we will continue. It takes a long time to ramp up in the body - 1 mg for 1 wk, 2mg for 2 wks, then we jumped to 4 mg - really bad idea as he was a zombie. Went back down to 3mg, with the intent to come back up to 4 after he adjusted to the 3mg, but he's still lethargic at 3 - not nearly as bad, but not himself. My son is almost 10, and we were told we would not see any effects until we reached the 3 mg level, which was true in our case. Focus has improved somewhat, tics are still very present - which I thought were going to decrease, and outbursts are still quite violent. He has also become EXTREMELY literal, to the point of we can't say ANYTHING without him making a comment. The positive is there is no increased hunger or other major side effects aside from the tiredness - which is supposed to go away after about 5 days - but not completely so in our case. Before we started on it, I read good things about it, and how it had worked for others, so I was hopeful. It's just not what we need, but may be for you. All we can do it try, right? Good luck! > > Has anyone had experience with the new medicine Intuniv? Thanks. > > >  > Faith never wonders why. > Worry about nothing, pray about everything! > 'Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet > is fighting some kind of battle.' > " For every minute you are angry, you lose 60 seconds of happiness. Guest guest
daughters been on it since March, I think the difference is minimal as I dont think its worth taking, dh thinks it is...but when I asked for feedback there were majoritively positive on her. aside from the only minimal results my dd put on 24 lbs since starting it. however she has mood problems so cannt take any stimulants and we had to take her off straterra after over a year on that, prior to this so it is this or nothing (thats where dh and I disagree) On Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 2:34 PM, Debbie <debsnest6@...> wrote:  Has anyone had experience with the new medicine Intuniv? Thanks.  Faith never wonders why. Guest guest
My son has been taking 2mg for several months and we think we see a positive change in his behavior. He also takes vyvanse so we haven't seen the tiredness that people complain about with this drug .. though we stopped the vyvanse for the summer and on weekends and still don't notice a tiredness in him... He's big though - 95 lbs.. almost 9 .. very overweight so maybe he's not taking enough to have that symptom. In any case - I'd say we haven't seen any negative effects. Guest guest
, So far, so good with Intuniv for us. (She also takes Vyvanse) We're about 5 weeks in at this point - but school hasn't started yet - next week is the real test. My daughter is also 8. Our doc decided to keep the dosing low for her for a while. We're only at 2 mg/day, and holding. There was increased agitation when we began - probably for the first week - until we moved to 2mg. I not only wanted to pull my hair out - but hers too! (Of course, I didn't) She's leveled out now, and is doing really well - not perfect - but I no longer expect perfect - just better. She takes her dosage in the morning, and is not tired or lathargic at all. Our doc didn't want evening dosing because (supposedly) this medication works best in the first 12 hours - and we want the most powerful impact while she's awake. As far as being tired - we really haven't seen that at this low dosage - but earlier in the year when we got to the higher mg (can't remember for sure if it was at 3 or 4mg), she was crashing after school and sleeping all evening. (We stopped Intuniv at that point because she was seriously in a "crisis" mode at that time, and we were looking for quick results, and not getting them.) I'll say a prayer for you on Monday...if you say one for me on Tuesday! Lori ( ) Intuniv I now believe we are going to try Intuniv for my 8 year old son. This is suppose to help his tics, as well as help him control his emotions and his ADHD symptoms (ODD symptoms too I hope!!). Anyway, I read some old posts where some where just starting with this med. Just wondering how it has worked........I also read that increased agitation can be an issue at first. How long did this last? How tired did this make them? He said I can always give it to him at night, but to start with I would rather give it to him during the day. Something bothers me about giving him a new med and putting him to bed!! We tried Clonidine a year ago...but even after 1/4 pill, he was still falling asleep @ school. He starts school on Monday, so I do not want to take any chances. Thanks for any input!!! Guest guest
Thanks Lori! I think I have read some of your posts & your daughter sounds very much like mine (and they are the same age). Is she also going in to 3rd grade!! I am really nervous about trying meds again....since the facial tic started when we 1st went this route a year ago. My son was so agitated on vacation last week, I'm not sure it could get much worse!! However, since we have been back (and it is just the 2 of us), things have been way better (making it harder to want to medicate). I know the problems will return with school, which is where the biggest issues are. Thanks for the heads up on the increased agitation. I am one to give up easily on the meds, so I will try to stick with it this time:)Feel free to email me personally: gina9431@...I think our 8 year olds sound a lot alike!!!I will be thinking and praying for you and your daughter on Tuesday Aug 11, 2010 08:19:05 PM, wrote:> > , So far, so good with Intuniv for us. Guest guest
My son is 9 and has been taking intuniv (2mg) and vyvanse (20mg) with much success. We stopped the vyvanse over the summer but he was falling asleep at camp. Hard to know if it was because of the extremely long camp day or an effect of the medicine. I started him back on the vyvanse since he was so tired. We didn't have any problem when we first started and noticed a positive change within 3 days of starting the meds. Good luck,
Guest guest
so far my daughter has been able to handle her emotions in school and she is onn 3 mg Intuniv, but this AM when I woke her up an insisted she get dressed for school and eat breakfast she became a 3 year old again claiming "she just wants to beat her head against the table!" However, after about 30 minutes of being up, we negotiated the bus ride. She will try to take the bus MWF and I will pick her up on Tues & Thurs. I agreed thinking that if she even tries the bus, we have made progress and this is her idea so maybe she will do it. She also thinks she can figure out the lunch line tomorrow. She got the rolling back pack as of today and she said it worked just great.. So, Patience. One minute we are 15, another minute we are 3 ......... Gotta love um... Guest guest
Just wanted to let you know that my daughter who I mentioned as being 15 1/2 and doing well on Intuniv, was on too much at 3 mg . She was very tired and became very depressed . Doctor dropped her back to 2 mg and it is ok. I guess she was way over medicated with Prozac, Intuniv and Topamax. Took her off the Topamax, decreased Intuniv. I can't keep up with this board, but felt it was good to know that 3 mg is a lot. Prozac is for PMS which she has big time!
