Kylie I am concerned about this too. I plan to have my dauhgter's

done in steps. Our orthodontist said it was fine with him.

Although it may be preferred to do it all at once you need

your sons cooperation.

I hope your orth is very flexible. I think this is key.

adjust to having them on. He was at the dentist's this a.m., getting his teeth

cleaned and he HATED it. He doesn't clean his teeth well, despite lots of

education and some supervision(my bad). I realise that it is a sensory issue for

him, the sounds, the feel of the tools scraping his teeth, the sound of the

machines, how have you all coped?

When my son was younger, he had to get a lot of dental work, cavities filled, etc. The (pediatric) dentist called in a prescription for one dose of Valium (or something like it) to take in the morning before he came to his appointment. It was to calm him down during the procedures. I don't know if the orthodontist would do this, and how it would work if your child is on other medication, but you could at least ask.

Thanks, Pam,

I hadn't thought of that option. I imagine that it might be more difficult to

get him to go back for more, but if it does become overwhelming for him, we

could do it in stages.

Hi Kylie,

My 10 year old Aspie son has had braces for about a year now. He started out

with upper and lower appliances that had to have a little wheel turned twice a

week. This was to widen the jaw which was to small for his teeth. After

talking to the ortho dentist about him and his issues we decided to go with

permanently installed appliances rather than the retainer type because this

would be a constant battle to get him to keep it in.

Over all he did okay with the appliances. He managed to bust them out about 3

times and the dentist would cement them back in with stronger cement. A few

months ago he had the top appliance removed and his regular braces put on. The

biggest concern the dentist and I had was that he would pick off the brackets.

He did break one of them off because it hurt the first day but other than that

he has been really good with them.

I did bribe him initially to get him to leave them alone. When he first had the

brackets put on I told him that every week that he had them all still on he

would get a dollar. He is motivated by money. So he would come to me every

Saturday and show me his mouth and collect his dollar.

Anyway, he is doing great and we make a very big deal to him about how straight

his teath are getting. He doesn't brush very well and we are not really

fighting that battle because I would rather that he just get through this

without to many little wars.

In my experience and opinion the best bet is to just get it done. Don't talk

about how long it will take and before you know it he will be use to it. For my

son the brackets were a piece of cake after the appliances in his mouth. I

think the biggest issue we have besides the not brushing well is that he is a

born " picker " and if he gets ahold of something he can pick with he will scrape

at his teeth.

Good luck.

Vickie
