Guest guest
It sounds like your diet is hammering you....I would get rid of the sauerkraut juice and try a month of GI Revive....a week or so into the GI Revive I would add a good probiotic (not from dairy) and some pure inulin to feed the good guys.Fermented foods are really rough on leaky gut....they will cause more inflammation. You need to avoid caffeine, mushrooms, fermented foods, all sugar (except stevia), yeast of any kind, high and medium carb foods, soda, most grains, processed meats of all kinds, processed foods of any kind, condiments, dairy of all kinds (unless you handle butter well).......stick to only good oils, add fish oil to supps, fresh greens, organic meats and wild caught salmon, lightly cooked stir fries are good. I would think that it would be good to go off of them until you can heal your gut and then slowly introduce them once you are healed. … anyone? From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of unicornsnme Sent: Saturday, October 03, 2009 1:37 AM Subject: [ ] homeopathic remedies w/ traces of lactose Quick question here...I've been on GAPS for 2 months now. Most days are just like regular days before the diet, distended abdomen, moodiness, etc. I've been able to introduce new foods and am still in stage 2 of the intro diet. Anyways...I see a homeopathic dr every week otherwise I am bedridden w/ pain. I was seeing him every week before on the diet as well. He tried everything he knew for me & nothing was working. Even went to a special training session on the brain for me. He's halfway thru the book Gut & Psychology syndrome & he is quite impressed. He is concerned though w/ how much the diet is hammering my body. He actually had me take a 4 day break from the biokult & the sauerkraut juice. It was great to feel happy & relatively normal for a few days. Anyways, he is constantly giving me homeopathic remedies bcuz I keep absorbing the die-off as poisons and it just kills my systems, brain, digestion etc. And I live on homeopathic remedies it seems, mostly arborateum, arnica, mag phos, nux vomica, rhus tox & a few others. After reading Gut & Psychology, now I'm working my way thru Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottshall and I'm noticing how much she mentions the body's inability to break down lactose & sucrose, both of which are carrier ingredients for these homeopathic remedies. Could it be slowing down my progress and feeding the bacteria? Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. Get Windows Live Hotmail Free. Sign up now. Guest guest
What is GI Revive? I have been avoiding all those foods for years. And have been on a diet like you suggested for years and still the puffiness. I am bipolar so I freak out & everything in my gut clogs up. I have not gone w/o a series of lumps in my abdomen since the 90's. Guest guest
K, I just looked up the GI revive. I have been on supplements like that in the past & they usually make me even puffier. Plus it has okra & aloe vera leaf in it...which Gaps says to avoid. I've been taking supplements for years w/ marshmallow root in it and I lived on slippery elm for years. So confused. > > > It sounds like your diet is hammering you....I would get rid of the sauerkraut juice and try a month of GI Revive....a week or so into the GI Revive I would add a good probiotic (not from dairy) and some pure inulin to feed the good guys. > > Fermented foods are really rough on leaky gut....they will cause more inflammation. > > > From: kellyhead@... > Date: Sat, 3 Oct 2009 18:18:25 -0400 > Subject: RE: [ ] homeopathic remedies w/ traces of lactose > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I thought gaps removes lactose and most sucrose too, or no? Guest guest
GAPS is obviously not working for you...sauerkraut juice is death to an inflamed gut. Have you tried a stool test to see if you have an abundance of foreign yeasts rather than the good guys? The biokult has strains of bacteria that irritate leaky gut...you need bifidous not lactobaccillus or acidophilous....they are acidifying and leaky gut needs the opposite. Guest guest
Sauerkraut used to make me feel so bad, I was sure it was actually bad for me. But on GAPS I introduced it sooo slowly; it took me months to get up to 1 tsp of juice with each meal (I started with 1 tsp per day), and months more to work up to 1/4 cup of kraut with meals. I got there after about 6 months on GAPS. Once I was at appx 1/4 cup, my bowels finally normalized. So my advice would be, take it really slow with all the probiotics, if you're having a hard time. Guest guest
Most people over on the GAPShelp group do the introduction diet, which includes an elimination diet to determine which foods you can tolerate. Fruit isn't introduced until later, and anyone who suspects yeast (or reacts badly) is advised to avoid anything sweet. Not too many people are eating bananas, at least until significant healing has happened. I do think it's a mistake that GAPS includes honey from the beginning though, and only tells people to avoid it if they suspect yeast since most people with gut problems have a yeast overgrowth. IMO, GAPS is still a work in progress, and you have to bring an awareness of your body to it. There's a lot of guidance on GAPShelp for how to determine what you can eat, but it's a hugely high-volume list. - > > > I looked at the GAPS diet and saw bananas, honey and many other foods that are not on the leaky gut meal plan. Guest guest
SOrry I am late in responding to this, but it sounds like you may have a methylation problem. My children also have this problem. When they detox, their body does not elimitate the toxins, so they circulate in the body and cause all kinds of problems. We are working with homeopathy to support their detox process but also follow the DAN protocol (Defeat autism now) to aid their methylation process while they heal. A great book on the subject is healing childhood epidemics by Dr. Bock. > > Quick question here...I've been on GAPS for 2 months now. Guest guest
Joan, I am new to the group and am very interested in your comments about fermented vegetables being harmful for leaky gut as well as the Bio-Kult. This is the first I've heard of this and I would love to know where I could go to find out more information about that. We have been on the GAPS intro for 2 months and are increasing our FV and Bio-Kult and I am very confused as to if we are healing, having die off or reactions. Thanks kim > > > > > > > > > It sounds like your diet is hammering you....I would get rid of the sauerkraut juice and try a month of GI Revive....a week or so into the GI Revive I would add a good probiotic (not from dairy) and some pure inulin to feed the good guys. > > > > > > Fermented foods are really rough on leaky gut....they will cause more inflammation. > > > > > > > > > From: kellyhead@ > > > Date: Sat, 3 Oct 2009 18:18:25 -0400 > > > Subject: RE: [ ] homeopathic remedies w/ traces of lactose > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I thought gaps removes lactose and most sucrose too, or no? Guest guest
Kim,I don't have current sources of info for you...I have gathered information over a period of years and have learned the "hard" way.Truthfully, I had some die-off in the beginning with candida and other yeasts....but on-going die-off for me would have been reactions.....I have never been able to add dairy back into my meal plans, but I have added back a limited amount of gluten. (Remember I have healed my intestines.) Bee's candida diet was not what was going to cure me....dairy was partly responsible for my intestinal issues. Dairy created reactions that could have been interpreted as die-off....but was actually causing further damage and inflammation in my intestines. Leaky gut changes things even though you have candida (or similar yeasts). I used a special diet along with GI-Revive and liquid minerals, b vitamins, and other supplements to heal my intestines. Over time I had issues with rare yeasts (geotrichosis--gotten from homemade farmer's market cheese and staph taking over my intestines...cleared up by antibiotics and then I was smart enough to use quality probiotics and inulin to feed the good guys. I use probiotics and inulin regularly now. Some people can tolerate undenatured whey....I am not one of those people.Leaky gut is caused by the "roots" of yeast burrowing into your intestinal walls so more yeast from fermented foods and vinegar just compounds the "load" on your intestines. The intestinal wall is only one cell thick...it is supposed to replace itself regularly, but if you are not absorbing nutrients then your body can not rebuild. I did stool tests to determine what actually was living in my intestines and chose probiotics accordingly. Now (after healing) I use a wider spectrum of probiotics.I learned much of my intestinal "stuff" from naturopaths and alternative practitioners' papers. I leaned practically nothing from the gastroenterologist. My illness is mostly functional and functional medicine is alternative and not mainstream. The GAPS diet is a pretty good one...for me the dairy piece is inappropriate and downright damaging. You may wish to read Mark Hyman's books.....in at least one of them he outlines the steps at getting to the bottom of gut issues....he has definite steps that help you determine if food intolerances and other issues are contributing to your ill health.dysbiosis is a good search term for youI would also search for in depth info on the kinds of probiotics you are putting into your body. Guest guest
Ohhh, wow! That is very enlightening! I will have to reread this several more times. Okay, I don’t know if I have leaky gut or not? I know I sometimes get very tired and moody. I did the GAPS for 1 month and felt a lot better and seemed to clear up some gut issues – diarrhea on and off for a year that started with a virus or the subsequent antibiotics, not sure which. I now seem fine in that department. I also am 4 mos pregnant so that is why I wanted to be careful about continuing gaps and cutting out too many things. Basically, I realize that I am at the stage to need to even find out if I have overgrown yeasts etc. I have no idea how to do this. When I was having the bad diarreah I did have my stool tested by a lab, but I think that was just for parasites or something and came back negative. Can anyone point me in a direction of how to even determine the state of my intestines? I am taking the biokult and have had much, much better immunity as had been struggling with colds what seemed every other week. Now, me or kids haven’t been sick since which is a blessing since pregnant, swine flu season and etc. How do you know what probiotics to take or not to take? Wow, I didn’t know any would be bad! Thanks so much for any info! Guest guest
Hi , I can't help you regarding testing because I have given up on that, but I just wanted to say that it sounds like you're on the right track, if GAPS and probiotics are helping you feel better! It can be very helpful to do GAPS while you're pregnant, including the probiotic foods. I think NCM recommends not doing the intro while pregnant, tho. If you are worried about doing too much healing too fast, try doing GAPS plus the BED pseudo grains: buckwheat, quinoa, millet and amaranth. They are very healthy foods, and if you add them to GAPS, and introduce probiotics and broth slowly, you can be sure that you aren't doing anything extreme (except that eating healthy food seems extreme...) If the probiotics are making you feel better, I don't think they can be doing any harm. It's when something makes you feel worse that it's hard to tell whether it's bad for you, or just die-off. I usually give it a week, and if I'm not better I figure it's bad for me. I had to increase sauerkraut veeerry slowly tho; I think I stayed at 1 tsp juice for a couple of months. HTH I did the GAPS for 1 month and felt a > lot better and seemed to clear up some gut issues - diarrhea on and off for > a year that started with a virus or the subsequent antibiotics, not sure > which.
