Guest guest
YES! I just came from the autism clinic today and they bumped up my sons Abilify. When he takes his morning meds he is fine and the abilfy make him a happy child. My son attacks me too and we have a behaviorist in place but the meds DO help very much... I advocate for the Abilify! Marcia ( ) rispedal for meltdowns? Has anyone had luck with using rispedal or abilify in a very low dose to reduce expolsive meltdowns that involve hitting mom? Our neuropsych recommended that we talk to our daughter's psychiatrist about this. Our daughter is on zoloft and this helped with reducing panic attacks and some of the anxiety. Guest guest
Hi Pam, My dd wasn't diagnosed till she was 19, as I've said before our area is fairly autism/asperger " ignorant " . She would have very volatile outbursts towards me, kicking a laundry basket at me, hitting, etc. and then be sorry. Like she couldn't control it at the time. The medication that made her very even tempered was Buspar. Now, she is 21, and has decided to be off of it, and I can tell by her mood swings. I soooo wish she wouldn't do it, but she is now an " adult " . I would LOVE for her to be taking the buspar again. I also have a friend who's dd aspie was helped by this medication. She would hold things in and hold things in, until a blow up came. Her counselor told me to let her go to her room to settle down by herself, that my " natural mother urge " to find out what the problems were was like physically prodding her and enraging even more! This did work better for her. Guest guest
Hi, My son is on a low dose of rispedal....it helps. He never hit me but he would throw things, get really angry, stomp on things ...etc. The rispedal has helped a lot. Guest guest
I have heard TONS of success stories with risperdal in reducing irritability and other autistic behaviors. as with any med. make sure any side effects experienced are outweighed by the benefits that the remarkable meds can provide. geo - ( ) rispedal for meltdowns? Guest guest
Thanks for all the feedback!!!! I wish we could try this. I am worn out by her hitting me so much and biting. My daughter is so upset to even take zoloft. She is so dramatic about that we think she is wierd that is why we give zoloft to her. I tell her she is not her anxiety and I don't think she is wierd at all. The only reason she doesn't stop the zoloft is she is afraid it will give her headaches. Oh boy! I try to reason with her that her panic is under control now she denies ever having it. I point out that she needs more medication not less that she hits me and explodes she denies that too. I have to hope that this outlook about medication will improve over time. She has no adverse effects. Guest guest
My son is on high dose Abilify 25 mg per day and could probably use a bit more. Also on Tenex 1 mg twice a day and Zoloft 50 mg per day. We systematically tried to slowly lower each one, one at a time, over the last year and, factoring in some withdrawal symptoms, we are convinced we can't live without these meds at this point. I hate the meds and the weight gain though. My daughter is growing into the meltdown/aggression crazy period. I just don't want to put her on an antipsychotic, although it is so far the only thing that has touched these for her in the past. I am trying like anything to avoid meds with her. We are having daily blow ups after school and it is really difficult. I am trying to wait for her to "outgrow" them, since she is fine at school, but I don't know if this will happen. My son did get much better as he got a few years older. I asked a local expert about my daughter and he recommended a trial of Tenex or Neurontin to target the anxiety/explosiveness. I am trying to hold off as long as possible, just to make sure it isn't still any Abilify withdrawal. ( ) rispedal for meltdowns? Guest guest
My daughter got MUCH worse on Zoloft. Felt like aspergers/bipolar by her reaction to it. The autistic irritability is treated so well with Abilify and Risperdal, but the side effects can be quite nasty. My daughter gained 13 pounds in 4 weeks on 2.5 mg of Abilify. Yikes! My son has gained a lot of weight on it, but socially he is not nearly as concerned about it as my 10 year old daughter is. ( ) Re: rispedal for meltdowns? Thanks for all the feedback!!!!
