My son does fine with olive oil.Sent via BlackBerry by AT&TFrom: "april_qian" <april_qian@...>Sender: Date: Thu, 01 Jul 2010 18:29:58 -0000< >Reply Subject: ( ) Negative reaction to olives/olive oil Hi there,Have any of your dd/ds had negative reaction to olives/olive oil? My ds is 4.5, dx'ed with HSF also hyperlexic. We've been on GFCF for 5 months now with pretty good improvements.I've been thinking about adding fatty acids since he seems to not get enough of those in his diet, and they are supposed to be so good for you. Once in a while we'd eat at Fresh Choice or Sweet Tomatoes because you can choose non GC foods. He loves olives so I'd get some for him. It seems every time after he eats them, he'd be irritable and defiant, much more than usual. When I add olive oil in dishes he gets the same reaction. I've tested a couple of times and it's thesame every time. It's amazing how certain foods can trigger such specific behaviors. Since we've been on GFCF and his communication has improved so much. When we were back on GC to test if he'd be different, he sure was. It's now easier to spot these other things that just stand out. So with olive/oil, he was still spontaneously communicating, but his attitude was negative toward just about anything.

I would pay good money if my kid would even eat an olive.

LOL...and my son LOVES Black Olives ever since he was a baby. When we went to the Olive Garden we would ask for a small bowl of them. He would put them on his 10 fingers and eat them. He is 14 and still loves them!

Jan – I laughed when I read this as my son, who is now 20, did

the exact same thing when he was small.  And, he still loves them.  If I am

cooking something that has black olives in the recipe he always asks me to give

him a few to eat.  In fact, I think I used to buy him his own can of them!

Jokes aside, here's the reason:

a lot of kids on the spectrum react to foods high in phenol. It seems like Andy

reacts strongly to olives, but so far we haven't noticed the other ones on the

list.
