Guest guest
Hi. I am an undiagnosed Aspie mom trying to survive with two aspie girls and one neurotypical boy. I am going back to school and still maintaining a household with three busy kids. Any suggestions as to how to get my home organized without tearing my hair out? Guest guest
Simplify. I know with eight kids (I know, I know) and two of them special needs, my biggest downfall (read cause of balding!) was the laundry. I found that by reducing the amount of clothes the kids had (who really needs 30 shirts and 10 pairs of jeans, right?) my laundry HAD to be kept up in order to keep the kids and ourselves looking neat and feeling good. When folks gave us "hand me downs" we only picked the things the kids really needed. One shirt in, one shirt out policy. All the extra was passed on to others. We home educate the kids, so that took care of the scrambling around in the morning packing lunches, catching the bus, making sure homework was in backpacks... We broke the house down into "zones" with clear cut pictures of what each child was to do as a chore each month (we go at least a month with each chore, and before we trade zones and chores, we get autistic one used to the idea for at least a week or two so he doesn't freak out- plus, he is assigned to another sibling to work side by side- he loves chores that are detail oriented like cleaning the keyboards on the computer...) We each do our "zone" every morning. It only takes about 10 minutes, and makes everyone responsible for our home. We have a rule of one toy or game at a time, to eliminate huge messes, missing pieces and the meltdown of our autistic one. (he insists that legos be separated by color in different bins- mind you, he won't build with them, but they have to be separated or he can't go to sleep at night obsessing about it!) Anyways, I probably overwhelmed you with suggestions. Sorry. Just filter out what won't work, and tweak what we have done to hopefully work for you! One room, one closet, one idea at a time. It isn't like the organization police are going to issue you a citation! The most important thing is that you love and take care of your kids! Housework is a distant second.... Peace! Guest guest
Consider the Flylady system. You can find it online. It's free and is babysteps up to a very organized way of keeping the house from looking like a bomb hit it without you having to do long, arduous cleaning binges. Check it out. I didn't do the 'control journal' although I probably should. Just mold it into your situation... Guest guest
Haha, I understand but don't have many suggestions! I am not sure if I am an Aspie but I have always had sensory issues and social problems, and now I have an Aspie son (which makes me wonder about myself), an SPD daughter, and a toddler who is being evaluated for autism. And I have days where I could totally tear my hair out. Don't have suggestions but thought I would post and say you aren't alone, I totally get it. > > Hi. Guest guest
I get it too--really I do. I'm half bald--I prefer to wear hats. So even if you do tear your hair out--there's always a way to hide it. As for organization, my son is a visual spatial guy. So guess what I use? Pictures everywhere. Picture schedules, picture labels. He doesn't even need the labels after he has put the picture in his mind--they will fall off and I don't even bother replacing them. Because once he has the pic in his mind, he has it. I have them in the bathroom--they show HOW to use the toilet (that includes wiping up, flushing, etc) So maybe you could try picture cards? If that doesn't work, I'm sure we all have more ideas. I have lots because in between hair pullings, I've tried everything possible!!! Purrs & Kisses, Kristal of Digi Kitty The Kitty who loves Digi! Guest guest
I’m an ADD mom with an aspie son, an ADHD son, a NT daughter, and an undx aspie husband. Our home is usually in disarray which drives most everyone here crazy. I have tried FlyLady, and I loved it, except that going online to check it increased my chances of being sidetracked by the internet. I also got distracted with perfection of my binder. I ended up going with http://www.motivatedmoms.com .. It’s a daily/weekly chore list for the entire year. I just put it on my fridge and check off what I need to do. For me this is perfect! Even if I fall behind a day or two it’s easy to keep up. I also use it to plan our meals which helps me and also my aspie can see exactly what’s for dinner for the week.
