Guest guest
..have a 19 year old son who was just diagnosed aspergers last month. i have a lot of pain for not kn.owing and having the wrong kind of expectations. regret he wasnt tested sooner..that he missed early intervention. family ties is the first place that said that they would try to match me with a supportive parent that had a similar situation. i hope to share resources that i find and hope this group can help a mom who truly wants to see her son succeed. i cant tell you how many times alex was bullied or taken aside by teachers asking him if he was high. we would always have him tested and it always came up negative. he never had friends to even influence him that way. nenita ---------- Sent from AT&T Wireless using Windows Live Hotmail Re: My son Hi, My son was bullied out of high school he is 17 years old. He has always tested off the charts with the schools IQ testing. Since he was a young boy I have always had problems with violent outbursts. In grade school he was put into a class for emotionally disturbed children. A teacher in that class asked me to get him tested for Aspergers. I only took him to see counselors who all said he did not have it. Earlier this week he came to me and said he wanted to go to the hospital because he was so depressed about school that he felt he may hurt himself. I took him and he was admitted into the psych ward. After a physician met with him and did some testing for about three hours, he called me and asked if I had ever heard of Aspergers Syndrome, I just broke down and cried out of relief. My son is now diagnosed with this. I would like to receive any information that would help me help him. The hospital will be referring us to a person who specializes in this. I just feel horrible for all the torment that my son has been through not only from his peers but from us expecting things from him that he could not do. For 17 years my son has felt alone and that no one cared for him. Any information would be helpful. Thanks, Braasch
Guest guest
Hi , your letter was so touching, I am glad your son will get some help now that you have something to go on. I have a son who is 46 years old now and he had a terrible time in school when he went too but back then they didn't call it autism or aspergers just called him retarded and tried to control it with behavior modification but hardly any of it ever worked on him. He finally was kicked out of high school mainstreaming because of melt downs I think because he could not handle the noise and stimulation there and the incessant demands to perform like a trained monkey, do this, do that, you get an M & M sort of things and he hated M & Ms! He used to spit them out and throw them at his teachers. I thought it was pretty ingenious of him to communicate the only way he could at the time as he could only say a few words. Finally when he was home with me he settled down but it took quite awhile even at that. Now I have a grandson in 1st grade who we wonder about as he has quirky behaviors. He has been home all week with strep throat and yesterday he drew me a page of all the telephone poles he has memorized from around town. He studies them and draws them perfectly and can tell you where any specific one on his sheet is in town. He especially loves the one on the dead end street near us and begs his mother to drive by it to show him. Yesterday I asked him to count them and he counted 67 telephone poles all different that he drew... His mother has had a few calls from school when he says he wants to kill everybody and blow up the school but we think he is just trying to be dramatic. Those words have caused the counselor to call a time or two. He is currently being tested for autism and a written test was sent home to fill out but no clear prognosis has been made yet. Well talk to you soon, Carolyn in Oregon Braasch wrote: > Hi, > My son was bullied out of high school he is 17 years old. He has > always tested off the charts with the schools IQ testing. Guest guest
I just have to speak up here. Get him out of school NOW. This has escalated to the red flag danger stage. These kids are a physical and legal danger to your child. The school has been informed... but in writing?? I honestly would not wait another day. The school has gotten their tax money for your child for this year. There is no longer any reason for them to work hard to intervene on his behalf to keep him in school. It's May. If you want, see if his doctor will write a note re home teaching for the rest of the year. This would be using their materials. If doctor won't, don't send him back. BUT, immediately get your legal responsibilities handled re whatever your state (huge assumption that you are in US) requires re homeschool registration, etc. Check truancy laws of your state. Be aware that schools lose money when kids are not in school without valid excuse. They will go after you for educational neglect if you allow truancy (their definitions counts here). It's about money and power. I would cite hostile educational environment with specific incidents listed. Most people cannot work/learn in hostile environments and your son's to/from and in school environment has escalated to dangerous to him. You generally do not need an attorney for this unless you plan to sue the school. Just do your homework and check the law. Whether you are secular or religious based, Home School Legal Defense Fund has state by state information; you can also google your specific state. The State Department of Education of your state has information, but often it's pretty buried. Guest guest
Thank you for the information. My son is home now and we have decided that we will go to the school in the morning to meet with everyone. I will not leave my son there anymore. I will be checking into home schooling him. I will not put my son in danger because of their lack of supervision. But when I called them on Friday to inform him he was diagnosed with aspergers, they said that now they could do more. I believe this is because of the funding they will recieve. Why couldn't they protect him before? Guest guest
My son is 4 and goes to a private preschool. There is something called an autism grant. If your kid is diagnosed they can get an education grant. I live in Ohio so, I don't know exactly where it is available. This is my son's first year and it makes a huge difference. I think when he starts kindergarten they try to get him into public school. Everything that I hear about public schools is scary. I don't believe they can give our childern the attention they deserve . Schools can barely handle regular kids nowadays. How can they handle ours?
