If you feel he can't handle money/finances and live on his own, make those type

of decisions or make his own healthcare decisions and needs a guardian, then you

can talk to an attorney (or do it yourself) about becoming his guardian. You

wouldn't go to court until he's 18 but could begin the process near his

birthday. Have to have valid reasons, like above.

I do know of that. My mom had to do that for my brother. And now my sister has to go through that since our mother's death. I have to leave for work now but will elaborate later this evening when I get home. I will say my brother is in a group home out of state. I am also not sure how old he was when she did this. He is also mentally retarded with autistic tendancies.

You have to do this for any child who is unable to take care of themselves. You should find a local attorney and he/she can help you get the paperwork done and filed.
