Like I said before I was the smartest kid in my elementary school in mathematics by the time I finished 2nd grade. I could do long multiplication (which I hated) long division (which I like), basic algebra stuff, and was starting to learn basic geometry stuff. This wasn't because teachers taught me all of this (God no, I was lucky if they would give me some multiplication problems) because I was totally obsessed and studied it about 2-3 hours a night when I got home. Were you that obsessed with anything when you were a kid? Do you really know any neurotypicals that have been (without being constantly pushed into it). Seriously this isn't exactly some common thing, and I know a lot of aspies are like this with something (later on I was like this with football, knowing more then just about any jock in my middle/high school about the sport and getting offered coaching jobs when I was in 7th grade.) Do you think Einsteins focus with physics (when he was a patant officer) was at all a "normal" level of focus.

I don't believe that's true. I think you are confusing "focus" with perseveration. Perseveration is associated with a problem within the brain causing it to function incorrectly. Here is one of the definitions that are given for perseveration --> <<Uncontrollable repetition of a particular response, such as a word, phrase, or gesture, despite the absence or cessation of a stimulus, usually caused by brain injury or other organic disorder.>> It is just not the same thing as being a genius.

All the traits were there. Relationship issues, schooling issues despite being incredibly intelligent, etc., oh and yea... he had a speech delay. Though how many NT patant officers do you know that changed the world? Heck extend that to any sort of middle management people. Normal (NT) people don't study physics in their free time so much that they change the entire field.

From: MadIdeas@...Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2010 20:57:09 -0400Subject: Re: ( ) Parenthood

I meant that I don't think Einstein had AS. I don't think we can really dx people just by observing some behaviors and even less by reading about people who have died already, even famous people. So I don't think Einstein had anything that needed a cure. But if he did have AS and I had the cure for AS, I would hand it over to him asap without losing any sleep that the world of physics would be harmed in any way. I don't believe his genius was related to autism or anyone's genius is related to autism. My one ds is technically a genius and has autism. I don't think the one caused the other at all. Without autism, he would still be a really smart kid but without all the autistic issues we have to deal with. Is that what you thought I meant? lol.

That is a ridiculous thing to say. Not only that, YOU don't know how much of his personality is due to autism whereas I do (being that I have known him his whole life.) But no need to feel sorry for my kid, please don't. He does not need your pity at all.

Yes, I know people who are very focused and dedicated to their area of interest and who are not AS or HFA.

I call them like I see them. The thing is you have never seen him without autism, so how can you tell me what he would be like without his autism? I can tell you that the things that give him joy will take on a totally different meaning.

I gotta say that I love what you wrote. I asked my 13 year old to read this and after we chatted a while, he said he liked himself. If we could just take away aspergers.......he said that he wouldn't want that! He honestly believes that aspergers is a part of him.

I asked him about when his OCD was soooo horrible that we worried about his emotional state.....he said that he wished that the OCD would have just all gone away, but that it was still a part of him. He was just very scared of his obsessive thoughts, but now, looking back, he wouldn't get rid of it.He said that it is his personality and HIM.

He credits his politeness and kindness to aspergers. He said, "If I didn't have it, I don't think I'd be so quick to be polite". He's a master at the computer, knew Yu-gi-oh and Pokemon cards like the back of his hands......and if there is anything that interests him, he learns it all the way. Is this aspergers? Who knows.............but he thinks it's all a part of him and if it was gone, he doesn't think he'd be the same person.

Here he is.......he wants to type something.

I know that things like OCD probably tortures alot of people, in my case I was obsessive about religion. I use to cry because I couldn't stop thinking about different parts of the bible, and get scared because I did things wrong, even though I was forgiven, and worst, I use to imagine that there was evil trying to get me or bite me...=( I know this sounds horrible to you, it was, but after a while, I got over it, I also use to watch "darker" TV, but once I got over all of this, It made me stronger, because once I got through it, I learned to NEVER go back to it, I know it seems like sH_T at the time, but if you are given alot of attention and love, you can get through it. I am Ian, and without aspergers, I don't think I would be the person I am today, I think I might not have gone through it all if I didn't have aspergers, but without it, I don't believe I would be nice or polite, I think I might have bean a very

rude kid, I'm 13 years old, I have read alot of stories on OCD and aspergers, and alot of them make it seem horrible, and it is, in a way, but I would not trade it. EVER. Take this from someone who has gone through it, taking away aspergers would NOT "fix" your child, infact, the idea of "fixing" a child, would mean you would lose many of the things you love about them, they wouldn't be so quick to be ok with themselves, if you let them grow up with it, (which you kind of have to) they grow ok with it, and if they learn enough about it, I don't think they would want to lose it either. Ofcourse there are many exeptions, but for me, and possibly for your child, I am glad to have it.

One more thing: without recieving lots of support, and attention, I really don't know if I would have turned out ok, so when your kid is crying, (truly scared to death) , whether it's from the dark, or from his thoughts or sadness, I think it's worth staying up with them in their bed in the dark untill he goes to sleep, or letting them sleep in your room with you, I think it's worth it, but I would also suggest not to do that EVERY night, because they might start feeling that it could be a need, so good luck, parents.

Wow.......I"m speechless and in tears. Just told him that maybe he should have his own "site" and his dad just told him that he should write a book!!!!.

Ok,,,,back to my reply to you, .

I agree whole-heartedly with you on the teaching example. If kids are taught the way they NEED to be taught (which, yes, is different for almost everyone), they learn better. The best years of my sons academic life so far have been the 2 that he was home to do online schooling and now,,,,,in a public school where the teachers are teaching the exact way he needs.I'm all for "helping" where they need help.........but no cure for us.....although the road has been bumpy.

I know Roxanna can defend herself, but that is extremely offensive, . I'm not sure you intended for it to be, but it is. She doesn't like Aspergers. She loves her son. You should think more before you say something like that.

My brother doesn't have Aspergers but he was very gifted in math and science and would spend hours in middle and high school doing extra work, just because it interested him. His yearly average in physics was a 97, which broke a record at our school.

Asperger's generally runs in the family... so using family members is generally a bad idea, because even if he doesn't have the disorder I bet he has some of the traits, but then again was he smarter then kids four years ahead of him?

actually I know many nt (albeit most are gifted but not aspie) that do have obsessions, it appears to be a trait of gifted children as well (coming from a gifted child who is a parent of a highly gifted and my cousin is profoundly gifted and had the most obsessions)

Oh my! Things are getting a bit heated here. Let's not say that ANYONE here

doesn't love their kid. I think I understand what is getting at but

saying someone doesn't love their child isn't going to get the point across.

There are some of us who feel that fixing or curing autism might throw out some

of the good with the bad. I've heard Temple Grandin talk about this. She was

interviewed on the radio and said she didn't want her autism to be cured if it

meant she couldn't keep her amazing gifts. People experience this type of thing

with certain disorders that are treated with medication. Sometimes people who

really do need medication in order to function will refuse to take it because it

interferes with something that they value in themselves. I think autistic

people might fear losing a part of themselves that they like.

I have a few autistic traits. I have a limited range of interests on which I

can become hyperfocused. It isn't math and it isn't really all that useful.

Still, I like it. When I take some kinds of anti-depressants I tend to lose

that part of myself. Fortunately, I've found an effective medication that

doesn't do that. I have ADHD which is pretty much untreated at the moment

except that the antidepressant I take can help a little bit. When I took

Strattera I felt like I was a much less patient mother. I was also jittery and

miserable. Being a mom is a huge part of who I am. I'm not perfect and I'm not

always patient but being less patient isn't acceptable to me. I would love to

be more structured and organized but if things are unstructured and disorganized

I'm not upset by it. So I don't get upset when my kids are chaotic. I'm an

extremely flexible thinker. ADHD meds make me a less flexible thinker. The

fact is, I need to be extremely flexible because the other people in my home are

a lot more rigid. My husband is the most inflexible human being I've ever met.

OMG, it's maddening. However, this is a good thing for his career. He's the

safety officer at work. Everyone goes home with all their fingers and toes.

He's the VP of Operations at a Nanotechnology company. He's a scientist. Oddly

enough, when it comes to intellectual pursuits he's more flexible but when it

comes to time and organization and interpersonal communication he's extremely

rigid. I'd have divorced him by now if my thinking was as rigid as his.

Whenever he gets angry with me, which is a LOT, I remind him of WHY he needs me

to be flexible. I'm a bit too flexible, in his opinion, about time and

completing household tasks. I think I'm too flexible when it comes to what kind

of behavior I tolerate from him. My kids are easy peasy in comparison. ROFL.

Please everyone, let's try to be respectful.

Miriam

You are insinuating that people without Aspergers are incapable of changing the world. That's ridiculous. Sometimes gifted people can present with challenging traits. That doesn't mean they have Aspergers. You're insulted because she doesn't like her son having autism? Seriously? Please make the rules for me so I know what examples are okay to use. He doesn't have Aspergers and yes, he was smarter than some people (I'd even say many people) who were 4 years older than him, when he was in school. I read at a 9th grade level and had the vocabulary of a high school student in 2nd grade. I don't credit that to bring related to someone with autism. I loved to read. From: smacalli Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2010 21:59:04 -0700Subject: Re: ( ) Parenthood My brother doesn't have Aspergers but he was very gifted in math and science and would spend hours in middle and high school doing extra work, just because it interested him. From: G <fnofsportshotmail>Aspergers Treatment Sent: Mon, March 15, 2010 8:05:04 PMSubject: RE: ( ) Parenthood Like I said before I was the smartest kid in my elementary school in mathematics by the time I finished 2nd grade. From: MadIdeasaol (DOT) comDate: Mon, 15 Mar 2010 20:44:54 -0400Subject: Re: ( ) Parenthood I don't believe that's true. I think you are confusing "focus" with perseveration. I agree, my nephew was nonverbal at age three, he is now five and considered

high functioning. He has had OT and doesn't need it right now. He will be in

mainstream kindergarten next year. He is on no special diets, and he's staying

with us this week and actually seems higher functioning than my aspie six year

old who was highly verbal very early and not even diagnosed until recently. I

think different things work for different kids. Really ot has been most helpful

for my own son from what I can tell. It is so hard to tell what makes the

differences though.

Ha! I'm not very good with the names yet, either, but my ability to remember anything nowadays is pretty poor! I'm only 37! Can't imagine what I'll be like in 10 years. Just too much to keep track of, up there in the ol' noodle!

Yes, the single mom!!! And the single dude who just found out about his son. Love them. I'm glad I stuck it out and kept watching it. At first I was there because of the AS. Now,,,,it's the whole thing!!!! Glad you love it, too!!

One funny thing, though. I honestly can't remember anyones' name. ha ha. Don't know why? Can you?

I so agree with you, Robin! It's one of my "must-see-TV" shows, every week. I love the single mom and her family, maybe the most, but the whole cast is so great! Love the show!!!

Ok,,,,I just got done watching the last Parenthood. When the grampa tells the dad that he's 10 times the dad he was.......oh. ...the tears. I'm loving this show more and more every week. The little dude who plays the kid with AS is really coming into his own.

I have never watched this show. Does it involve a child with asperger's?

Yes. One of the couples has a boy w/ Asperger's. My husband swears they have a

hidden camera in our house, b/c 95% of the time the episodes are about something

we are going through that week! :)

I don't know if this has been emphasized before, but there is a TV show called Parenthood on Tuesday nights on NBC that has an Asperger's boy named Max as one of the roles. It was really a support for me, and I convinced my tough husband to watch it with me after awhile.. (I recorded the series) It has been a real relief system as we see the very behaviors or similar ones that our Aspie daughter displays. It makes us laugh and also makes us realize we are not the only ones with these problems. All of you parents of AS children would be wise to watch this if you have time, as it is a mental health relief and the other parts of the show are also funny with real life neurotypical crisis' to solve.
