Guest guest
I don't think there are many people on here who haven't been (or still are) in your shoes right now. I know I am one of them. My DS is 10, was only FINALLY Dx last February after YEARS of seeing developmental pediatricians, arguments with my ex husband, different psychiatrists... it's more than exhaustive. Stick with your gut! I wish I had at a much earlier age for my DS.It may never really get 'fixed,' but we can all learn different skills to cope and manage the social skills necessary for survival in this big, bad world! :-)Best, JackieFrom: C <stick_n_blaze@...> Sent: Fri, January 7, 2011 4:14:08 PMSubject: ( ) ?Confused mom? Guest guest
thank for the advice...I have their web site bookmarked and I also own the wrightslaw book special education, I also have a copy of the VA special education laws and regulations...I have been reading and looking things up for 3 months now so I feel more educated on things at this point. I just know how our school system works and the less money they have to spend the better(so it seems). we have been down this road once and I was told he did not qualify because he has passing grades. well if that happens again on the 13th we are taking this to the next step...I even offered to pay for him to have an Aid and I was hold they can't allow that! I will have an update on all this sometime after the meeting. wish me luck and thanks again. > > > , > You should go over to www.wrightslaw.com and learn about your rights. Guest guest
Hello , I am so where you are right now and can relate. And it's not because you are 27. I am 43 and the school is not taking our situation seriously also. My son also has ADHD and no one wants to touch the Aspergers except for a psychiatrist who said PDD-NOS. But the school won't consider this in his accomodations, or put it into the IEP. Do you have an IEP? Maybe you need some serious testing done. I suggest going outside your school for it if yo u can. We let the school test, and they skipped some, and did the others very poorly. We have our 3rd IEP coming up in a week. The 2nd one was just Dec 10, and it was the worst IEP meeting ever! My Advocate said so! Since I'm in the same boat, I'm not sure what to advise, but hang in there. We are here to listen, and I'm sure someone will write with some good advise, this is a great group. Guest guest
It is so frustrating. Moms have to become the experts to try to figure things out and get treatment. And it can be expensive or time consuming looking for services that fit budgets or insurance plans. So many of us go through this, because when kids are young they often manage to pass classes and AS kids usually are not behavior problems. Here are some things you can do to make a case for AS. You can get a neuropsycological evaluation. He is at the right age now at age 9 to do this. So many many tests are done on how he reads facial experession and lots of tests on executive function. Has he had an IQ test? There are a few subscores that tell you interesting things, like is his processing speed slow, does he have a deficit in working memory. A neuropyschological test can sort out many learning issues that the school academic tests will never find. Is he slow at doing work, because he is working slow, is weak in motor or organization skills, is he perfectionizing, redoing and restarting, does he get frustrated easily? AS kids will have some kid of obsessive behavior. It is part of the critieria for diagnosis. This can be repeating the same question, touching, lining up, telling information without regard to others interest in one particular area. Does your son have anxiety or hyperactivity? When a child's issues are not obvious than often Moms have to get to be experts or else our kids continue to suffer. I think it is good that you are reaching out to groups to figure out what is going on. Pam > > I will try to keep this as short as possible, but I may end up writing a book, sorry in advance! Guest guest
Hi Carolyn, Our daughter was diagnosed with Asperger's by a neurologist when she was almost 4. I can understand you're questioning yourself, as I've done the same thing at different points. Even fairly recently, as she can have some very good periods, where I think she is so much better than before. That has deteriorated again, and I am more convinced than ever that AS is a good diagnosis for her. At age 3-4, she had a lot of Sensory processing issues. Once I learned about this, I took her for private OT. But I didn't think that was the whole picture. She had a lot of tantrums, but also, a lot of difficulty with social interactions and having to have things a certain way. Socially, she often refused to answer people, and would stomp her feet, flail her body and start screaming when people (from church she saw weekly) approached her. She had to have certain things the same way, like arm rests down in the van, exiting through the front door of the van inside of the door near her seat. Very rigid about a lot of things. She was very particular about listening to music from infancy, choosing her favorites. The more I read about AS, the more it seemed to fit. I read the " Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome " and typed up how I thought the different criteria for AS applied to her. I brought it with me and presented it to the neurologist. He diagnosed her from the first visit. He said we didn't need to see a psychologist, he was sure of the diagnosis. I didn't have such good results from school. They used the same info, plus their testing, and refused to label her with ASD, but kept the Early Childhood Developmental Delay label. They didn't think she had obsessive tendencies that affected her " AT School " . That was the big thing that was hard for me to prove. Now we are trying to re-enter school, after 1.5 years homeschooling. Her MET/IEP is Monday. Now the reports are suggesting 2 other possibilities to why she wouldn't qualify for ASD " At school " . I hope that helps you,
Guest guest
Wow, this sounds so familiar. I have an AS just turned 8 yr old daughter. I had her sit through 8+ hours of neuropsychological testing. I was told by my school district they wouldn't take it because the DR. isn't a LSSP. So, they did their own testing and I was told by the school psyh that she most probably won't qualify for services. Yes, she is a A student, but also has anxiety, ADHD,and can't write where it is legible. She is in habdwriting class thats it. I could go on and on. We continue to wait on the school district to give us our final ARD. Seems they are still getting all her test results together. > > > > I will try to keep this as short as possible, but I may end up writing a book, > >sorry in advance! Guest guest
You can ask the school to have one down by someone they refer you to. If they say " no " you can have a private neuropsychologist do the tests for you and then ask that the report be accepted by the school. We had to do that. Schools are suppose to " find child with issues " they should pay for it, I didn't want to fight them on this point so we paid. Dr. Hollander " Clinical Treatment of Autism " describes all the tests for Autism and AS. When I have more time I will reply with what the tests are they are tests for executive function, processing speed, tests for social awareness etc. I will look up the specific tests that are in a neuropsych eval for you by Monday. Guest guest
Schools do say that. But a neuropschological test is considered one of the gold standards by lawyers for helping to advocate services. The reason is neuropysch evaluations have standardized scores like IQ tests and it is hard to dispute the facts of the eval. You will have to find an advocate, and ignore the school this time and find out what it is your daughter needs. My daughter was able to cope until about 4th grade and then by 5th she was overwhelmed. We had the neuropsy test done at age 9 so we had all the reasons why she was not able to cope documented already. And she was not treated as a behavior problem. Kids with AS need help in many ways. Guest guest
Oh she should be in a preschool for kids with special needs at the public school not in isolation at home. You need an advocate to help you. She can have OT right now. As my daughter got older we were able to get standard scores for the areas of weaknesses. Many AS kids have excellent reasoning skills and verbal skills and yet they may have clear deficits in processing, transitioning their mindset (flexible thinking), organization and planning skills. These are real learning issues. When a child has a discrepency between reasoning skills high and processing (for example) deficit there is going to be a lot of frustration that the child wants to do better but can't. It is not just an issue with poor social skills. And even if it was she should not be isolated at home at such a young age. I hope this helps. We had so many problems and difficulty getting th e school to understand. They just didn't want to. Unfortunately it meant for us having to accept an out of district placement. Some schools do better at helping others only when pressed by advocates. Pam > > > > I will try to keep this as short as possible, but I may end up writing a book, > >sorry in advance! Guest guest
One thing that is very noticeable in some kids with autism and other developmental disorders is that they are very ridgid thinkers from very young. Not flexible at all. Poor motor skills, lax joints is present in some kids. Kids with autism or AS are going to go and look at " things " in a party room. They are not going to join in with kids unless they are directed and assisted. Shy kids are quiet and withdrawn. AS kids can talk your leg off from a young age if someone gives them attention. Shy kids rarely do this. Got to go ... Pam > > > > I will try to keep this as short as possible, but I may end up writing a book, > >sorry in advance! Guest guest
I notice that my son seems to act out more often in places that he is comfortable in. Not so much in a place he is new to or the dr office, I also noticed he is a screamer and will scream all day at any and everything that's going on. He is hypersensitive and Im not sure if these are traits of AS. We did have an IQ test done and his score was around 120 or so. They did and autism test and told me he did not fit that dx because the Dsm book said so and they showed to me what the book said. He also talks all the time and if I stop him he will start all over or just keep talking. I am taking him to a neurologist in Danville on the 12th of this month. Is there any thing I should request them to do that we may not have already done at the other 2 offices? We did have one dr say he fits into the opp-nos category...in order for him to get an AID in school we must have a set dx and some type of documents saying that he needs the 1on1 help. He can't do anything at school on his own without the teacher standing over him, but the school does not seem to think this is an issue because he has passing grades. I just hope something good will come from the dr and the meeting with the school. Thanks for listening. > > > > > > I will try to keep this as short as possible, but I may end up writing a book, > > >sorry in advance! Guest guest
Hi , So far as his grades, you might ask - would he have those passing grades if the teacher wasn't staying over him, prompting him to stay on task, do the work, etc. Apparently he needs prompts to do this. I'd include any homework " help " needed too (not sure how much he has at his age). Came across this, have you tried here yet? - http://www.autismva.org/about http://www.autismva.org/sites/default/files/12-16-10%20Clinic%20Brochure.pdf Hang in there! > > > I notice that my son seems to act out more often in places that he is comfortable in. Guest guest
I can honestly say I know what you mean about being younger and feeling a lack of respect. My son is 4 and Has ADHD, Aspergers, OCD, SI and has seizures. He has been seen by two nurologist and is soon to see his third. The second nurogolist didn't dx my son but that was only because he was 18 months old at the time and in his words he didn't want to "doom a child with a dx at such a young age". I have been fighting for a solid year to get to the unoffical dx that I have now. It is hard work and it will pay out eventually! Guest guest
, You are right to some extent. Medical there is only a current ICD code to for all the types of autism, which is 299.0. Aspergers, HFA, and PDDNOS do not have their own separate codes. I read one time that there is a movement at large in the medical community to assign a separate code to each type of autism. Right now, though, they are all condensed into one. Regards, > > I was told that to get help at the school for aspergers the dr. has to put it on as autism because aspergers is still not recognized. Guest guest
Pam, I will save you some time. My daughter had a neuropsych done and the results were astonishing. Here is the website of the tests that the dr. did. http://beverlytignorphd.com/Tests.html There are four pages of tests. To get to the next page, you will need to clink on " more " at the bottom of each. Now, each neuropsych dept. may have a test or two different but I had another neuropsych specialist look at my child's report and she approved of the battery of tests that were administered. Guest guest
, I have to agree. Keep at it. I knew my son was different at age 3 but was told they couldn't assess him until kindergarten. We were stationed in Germany at the time. When he was evaluated at 5, he was diagnosed with ADHD, then they added Sensory Integration at age 7. When a therapist suggested Aspergers when my son was 8, we had him tested. We were told he didn't fit the criteria. (we were still in Germany seeing military doctors) Then we came back to the states and at age 10 he was dx with Aspergers. Since then he has been reevaluated three times and still has the dx. My son is now 13. No one knows your child better than you. Go with your instinct. Sometimes I get angry and think that maybe if we had gotten the dx sooner we could have gotten our son more help that he needed. But hindsight is 20/20 and doesn't change where we are now. Just hang in there! That's all we can do!ne From: Hukill <gothpunkgurl17@...>Subject: Re: ( ) ?Confused mom? Guest guest
Schools push back on parent's for sure. Ours did the same. It is hard to argue for your child's weaknesses. But that is what we have to do. Schools don't have to accept reports, but you have the right to ask for an independent evaluation from a neuropsychologist (not a social worker or school psychologist) at their cost (if they insist). Schools only test for academic knowledge they are not qualified or able to test for any learning issue other than reading delayed. I hope you can find some support.
