HEY LINDA!

Wondered where you were at! So glad your wrist is doing better - must be so

nice to have all the metal out!

Happy birthday Skye and ! Skye sounds like she is doing really well!

You lucky duck getting a great TA! Still the little Houdini eh? Emma is

getting that way too and I am so worried about when she starts school next

year - the school backs onto a bird sanctuary which is full of deep ponds

etc.....if she ever ran off I am scared that she will venture into the

reserve. Oh well, maybe they'll give her some extra money for a teacher

aide - yeah right!!!

By the way - I still have Kanes hat! Maybe I should send it to you since

our schedules both sound a bit crazy!

Hi Cat, my son n is 10-1/2, going into 5th grade. He was diagnosed when he was 9. I have looked at websites and books, they give you the general idea of what you are dealing with and how to help your child. But if you have specific questions or want to know how to advocate for your son in school, this group is a great help. And of course it helps to talk to someone who is going through the same things as you and understands. How did your son come to get diagnosed?SuzanneSent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: Cat <lavendarandspice@...>Sender: Date: Sun, 8 Aug 2010 17:48:52 -0700 (PDT)Aspergers Support<Aspergers Treatment >Reply Subject: ( ) Reintro I introduced myself the other day but not sure it went through. He had a neuropsychological profile done. I will need help in advocating for him in the school. He will be entering the 6th grade and I'm afraid the IEP won't cover everything as they dismissed him from speech. He had trouble talking at first. Both my boys did. Not major though but the neuropsych suggested speech and language for him. As well as occupational therapy. I think there's something else but can't remember. Hi Cat! My name is and i have a 15 1/2 yo daughter who likes to call herself Cat.. She is obsessed with cats and always has been. Animal science is her passion and she has always sworn she will be a Vet even though her IQ is just average and she is AS, diabetic, epileptic, dyslexic, dysgraphic, ADHD, and a mid teenaged girl which is often my biggest problem. We have been through all kinds of things with her but we hang in there. I swing from being depressed to feeling I should be grateful she is even functioning. Today she started high school in public school after 3 years in a small private special ed school. We have been in high tension, depression and bite each others heads off mode for months now as we anticipated this event. so far, so good.. It is 11:00 and the phone

You need to request (in writing) a full educational evaluation from the school that includes pragmatic language and social skills. ST actually do more than just get them talking! When they try to dismiss him from a service and you feel he still needs help, then you need to disagree with them in writing. I assume that they must have come up with a full evaluation showing he no longer needs speech? If they did and you don't agree (and your neuro-psych doesn't agree), then you need to request an Independent educational evaluation (IEE) at their expense. Again, put your request in writing. In this case, you would get someone outside of the school to do an evaluation and bring that back to an IEP meeting to discuss the results. I have done this a few times myself so it is not complicated. For more information about IEE's, you can google them over at www.wrightslaw.com

Recently, my youngest ds (dyslexic) was dismissed from ST and I got another evaluation when we switched schools. Anyway, long story short, the outside ST who evaluated him did evaluations in the areas of concern and she found a lot of issues to work on. He went on to qualify for an IEP in 3 different areas. In fact, the meeting was spent with the "team" discussing which qualifying area to put down on the form. I left that decision up to them. lol. But regardless, he was being quickly dismissed from services where he was passing their cursory eval's while I could see he still had a lot of concerns.

Well, she made the first day alright, but it is now day 2, 9:30 am and she called from the nurses office. Her neck and back hurt. Each class requires a 3 ring binder and then there are the books and other supplies. She is only 5' tall and the book bag is almost as heavy as she is. To make it worse her classes are criss crossed from one side of the building to another every period and halls are crowded. The plan to go to guidance if she is upset isn't working because their offices are flooded with kids.. Physical and technical problems.... how do we avoid them??From: sandee C <irsandee@...> Sent: Mon, August 9, 2010 11:09:04 AMSubject: Re: ( ) Reintro

Yes, the backbacks with wheels is a good idea. Even some of the teachers in the high school use them as they don't have a permanent classroom. Just check with the school to see if it is okay to use. In our high school backbacks can not be used during the day...string backs can.

 Dear Sandee C:

How about a two wheel "Carry On" size, pull behind bag. A piece of luggage like you would "Carry On The Plane"? One Down. Maybe she can now cope with the treck accross the shool campus, and not have to deal so much with the guidance office. She may start a fashion statement. There must be other NT 5' girls that do not like to carry all their books on their back.

T.

With my youngest who is dyslexic, organizing was really a problem. Each teacher (4th grade even!) had their own folder, color of folder, and requirements. It did not work! He was always bringing the wrong one or losing materials and then called lazy for his efforts. Finally, I made my own system for him - one folder with different sections for each class. He had the folder with him all the time, no lost materials. That is part of what should make an IEP useful. When your child can't do something as expected, brainstorm for an alternate plan that will allow her to accomplish the task.

Other options we have tried with other kids of ours - let them leave their book in the classroom. Some teachers did this automatically and it was great. You can request a set of books for home use as well, so she doesn't forget books at school. My oldest ds would simple lug all his books and supplies through the whole day! He could not use a locker. I wish now we had addressed that problem head on, however, they decided to let him use a cubby in the sped teacher's room. So he could organize in a bigger way, which he needed and the sped teacher could help, as it was his room used as "central" location.

You might even go through her day with her on paper and then organize what she needs and when so she could have a list to help her keep track. Tack lists on the inside of the locker, her bookbag or a book.
