Guest guest
That is one show my husband and I will not miss! We were both in tears last night. We usually are with this show, but especially last night, because our 7-yr-old son asked me last Friday, " Mama, why am so different from other kids? " My husband wasn't in the car with us, so I didn't want to get into the whole AS conversation. I asked him what he meant and he gave me some examples (getting mad, not being able to stop thinking about something, and being really good at video games). I told him that everyone is different. Some people are really good with some things (like playing video games or doing math) and they need help with other things (like controlling their temper or making friends). I told him that " different " is not " bad. " It's what makes you special & unique, and that his dad & were here to help him get better at the things he needs help with. We will probably tell him. The question now is " When? " Gladys > > I have to say, Parenthood has become one of my favorite shows these days. Watching it last night, it really gives the true picture of AS and how it works. Guest guest
My husband and I like to watch it. We don't have any IRL friends with any aspie kids and it's nice to see others. It's kind of funny how things on the show happen about the same time it happens here. We lost our primary BCBA (not because anyone was sleeping with her..LOL) and my husband decided to do a quick change and her schedule was messed up. I think it helps my husband see how other "kids" act and their behaviors. Guest guest
I just found Parenthood and I have also really been enjoying the Max storyline. Your comments made me curious - do you consider that character to have a pretty extreme case of AS? My little guy is only 3 1/2, so I don't really know what to expect from them as they get older. Guest guest
I wouldn't say extreme. I'd say a little more than middle of the road.Sent from my iPhoneOn Mar 2, 2011, at 6:40 PM, "bridget" <beanniferj@...> wrote: I just found Parenthood and I have also really been enjoying the Max storyline. Guest guest
My daughter is very mild and does not have an official AS diagnosis as her evaluaters are on the fence. Guest guest
I am not an expert, by any means on AS, when my son was diagnosed a little more than a year ago, I had to read up on it to find out what exactly it was. I don't know how extreme the levels are, some of the characteristics the boy on the show has, my son doesn't really show, but others are on 100%. It is amazing, the more open up to people about AS, there are a lot kids out there that have it, then I ever realized, I have a lot of friends who know other kids with it. I think, bringing it out in the open, and acknowledging it in shows like Parenthood, is huge! My feeling, the show teaches others this isn't a perfect world, and there is nothing wrong with our kids, they just have challenges they have to work at. Question for parents out there, at what ages do you talk to your child about their diagnosis? Our child psychologist said we can tell our son, if he asked, but didn't recommend bringing it up to him (he will be 13 next month). > >> > > >> > >I have to say, Parenthood has become one of my favorite shows these days. Guest guest
that is interesting. all our doctors say my son is "mild" but his actions are worse than Max's. makes me think they are making it seem less so as not to worry me.... Guest guest
The conversation with Max was so hard to watch, since we had an identical conversation with our Aspie a few years ago. The father character (Adam), is also hard to watch, as he reminds me of my husband...trouble accepting the diagnosis, etc. Corey > > >I have to say, Parenthood has become one of my favorite shows these days. Guest guest
I love Parenthood also. I think it's great for my husband (who is stepdad to my aspie) to see another aspie kid and the similarities. I thought Max was truly aspergers and was amazed to find out he wasn't! My (10 yrs old) is similar but doesn't have those fits of screaming and all that. Also, I NEVER kept him to a strict schedule (mostly bc I was a single mom for 7 yrs)- I've always taught him that these are the " general " things that happen each day and each week but sometimes things change. Sometimes he likes the change sometimes not. I try to keep him informed so he is comfortable. Mostly he wants to make sure he has a guarded time of day to do what he wants to do. He hates it when we don't get home or done until 8 and he has to go to bed. Sort of like Max comes off as rude or uninterested sometimes. But he doesn't completely ignore anyone unless he doesn't know they are talking to him. He's more likely to think you are talking to him when you're not. And he's literal but has a great sense of humor about it. The other he asked about what happens when our brains are deprived of oxygen and in the course of conversation I said something about, " well if it has no oxygen for too long you can turn into a vegeatble " and immediatley I thought uh-oh! He looked at me so crazy and said, " what kind of vegetable?? " LOL sooo funny. When I explained he laughed and laughed and told me he was thinking corn LOL > > >I have to say, Parenthood has become one of my favorite shows these days. Guest guest
I would agree that he is middle of the road. He isn't on the autistic end but not mild either. That actor is very good or he is Aspergers. The look is convincing. The tantrums do happen even with mild aspergers...
