Guest guest
I don't have much experience w/ aides, but have you asked her teacher to circle or underline the key words in the statement before she's given the assignment? Maybe that could make a difference and might be something good to try now, as you're working on the aide part? Maybe you could even ask for a few more homework sheets and have the instructions cicled/outlined like the teacher does and then teach her how to read the instructions? Minimally, it might give you more insight as to where she's getting stuck. "Over-optimism is waiting for you ship to come in when you haven't sent one out." She tested okay for her DRA testing for 3rd grade. But she is failing in the classroom. So far all the papers she's been bringing home have been D's. She doesn't understand (process) the directions on the page. For example, she may have a chart showing the times a person does certain things. When asked a question of how long that person did a certain thing, her answer would be the time that person started instead of the amount of time. Most of her papers are showing that she doesn't understand the directions and needs them read to her. The teacher will go back and circle or underline the key words in the statement for her AFTER she's done so poorly on the paper. From what I've seen in her papers and such, I firmly believe she is going to need one-on-one help. So I am afraid that I am going to have to request an aide. They don't like aides in the elementary level. Apparently they don't think the kids need them for the level of work given. But really needs someone to read what the directions are and then help her understand what she needs to be done. So, I was wondering what people on here have had to go through to get an aide. I know I heard a lot when I was going through with . But he didn't require an aide and had different difficulties than . I don't know that since tested out at 3rd-grade level, if they will be willing to provide an aide. But she is getting D's consistantly on her papers. Also, since they are in the process of testing, and we are scheduled for eligibility on Feb. 4th, how I can implement the other key accomodations needed for her until then. They had issues with her IEP meeting-that they had to keep accomodations in her current IEP for her speech only because the goals set for her right now are only speech-related. And I am not sure they will be willing to put other accommodations in until they figure out what else is going on with her. (Thus the testing competed.) I know they will want to wait until they have a better picture of what else is happening before writing more goals into her IEP. So what do I do in the meantime? They want me to get a tutor. I can't afford one? Thanks,Melinda
Guest guest
I'm sure the teacher would say that she doesn't have time because she has 23 students. She does have a resource teacher in there at times, but not all the times. I am not even sure if seeing the underlined or circled word would help. I'm not even sure if doing that PLUS reading it to her would help. I think she would still need further information to help her understand what is asked of her in the directions. That is why I am thinking towards having an aide. Thanks. -Melinda
Guest guest
Melinda, has a neuropsychological evaluation been done? Also, if the school is suggesting tutoring, they have to provide it or pay for it. I think it is going to be very difficult to secure an assistant. Is your daughter currently receiving any support under RTI (Response to Intervention)? Does she have a PLP (Personal Literacy Plan)? Resource support? Pam In a message dated 11/23/2009 10:14:36 A.M. Guest guest
I'd think I'd push back and point out that it would just be underlining and circling the key points of the instructions before the test instead of after the test, so hopefully it wouldn't take any additional time. It sounds like this could be helpful either way too. If it works, your daughter should start doing better in school. If it doesn't, you'll have more ammo as to why she needs an aide to help with things like this. "Over-optimism is waiting for you ship to come in when you haven't sent one out."
