Guest guest
Hmmmm..........I feel that if a person loves something, like cats, and is alone (lonely or not), that we surround ourselves with what we are happy with. Animals in general are easy to acquire. So,,,,,,,I'd say Yes, it's possible that "cat ladies" are AS....or any other socially different people.Something to ponder. Attack and enjoy every minute of life. Try everything.....protect everything. Guest guest
Interesting thought since my daughter loves cats. I have always said that she has the personality of a cat. In her case a mean cat, but it is an interesting analogy...... Guest guest
There is actually a website on animal hoarding that talks about how hoarding develops but it is usually recognized as more of an OCD issue. I think there's a show now on Animal Planet devoted to that topic. http://www.animalhoarding.com/How-Animal-Hoarding-Develops.html > > I¹m starting to wonder if many stereotypical ³cat ladies²-- women who own > dozens of cats but don¹t properly care for them‹ are actually women with > Asperger¹s Syndrome who have been marginalized (since women aren¹t ³allowed² > to be eccentric) to the point where their only companions are animals, and > collecting them turns into an unhealthy obsession. > > Thoughts anyone? > > >
Guest guest
I've known two cat ladies... and yup to both of them. Both intelligent, articulate, poor social skills. One works for gov. in office (tax stuff) with little contact with public and a history of problems with co-workers... has no friends except much younger adult female with autism diagnosis (the family uses the cat lady). The other cat lady was older, not needing to work, traps cats and other critters, rescues tons of cats (a dog or two), no current friends, highly intelligent, articulate, poor social skills, no other interests except cats. Both of them live in houses devoted to cats and litter boxes. Both of them just want to be left alone or to talk about their interests. I would agree that these ladies have been marginalized, as are many high functioning ( " less obvious " ) disabled people. Kind of says a lot about our society. Guest guest
I think this may be an over-reaching idea. My mom is a " cat lady " although she does pretty well taking care of them, and she has no social problems, isn't even remotely eccentric, and has other friends. I'm sure there are plenty of animal obsessed aspies that use animals for companionship. But there are plenty of animal lovers and irresponsible pet owners that aren't aspies. And some do take very good care of there pets. There are also some people with only a few pets that have unhealthy obsessions over them--like spending all their money and time on the pet like it is a person. Aspies and nt's. > > I¹m starting to wonder if many stereotypical ³cat ladies²-- women who own > dozens of cats but don¹t properly care for them‹ are actually women with > Asperger¹s Syndrome who have been marginalized (since women aren¹t ³allowed² > to be eccentric) to the point where their only companions are animals, and > collecting them turns into an unhealthy obsession. > > Thoughts anyone? > > >
Guest guest
Please do not cross post here. I think "cat ladies" are mentally ill people who hoard animals instead of or in addition to "stuff." That really has nothing to do with having AS, although a person with AS could also have a mental illness. As for women being "allowed" to be eccentric, I don't believe it's true that they aren't allowed at all. People who are eccentric, not AS, are just eccentric whether the world allows it or not, which is why they are eccentric. Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. Guest guest
I don't think that's true. Anyone who is eccentric is probably being shunned, whether they are male or female. That would be why they are labeled eccentric. Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.
