Guest guest
Did you get him evaluated through your local school district yet for early childhood special education? Do that first. Then, they will provide the OT and it doesn't cost anything. I would read up on AS as much as you can. I recommend Tony Attwood's books, but I'm sure others can give you more ideas to understand your son. Leah > > My little boy was just diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. Guest guest
Marina, You want an OT that has a lot of experience in sensory processing. I like to call it being " sensory smart " . Even though all OT have some training in this sub specialty, it is like taking a ten week course in a foreign language. After 10 weeks, you are familiar with the language but you can't speak it fluently. The only thing that I can think of is to find OT close by and interview them. I have called around myself and asked for their experience in treating sensory integration. If they really want to help your child, whthey will provide you with this information. If they seem to not have the time for you, you don't want them to treat your child. Regards, > > My little boy was just diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. Guest guest
You might want to start with a local support group if there is one. You can contact Easterseals to see if they have some asperger groups. If they don't, they seem to know where there ARE groups. They also have occupational therapists on staff who work with kids. They can do OT evaluations as well. My kids were both evaluated at easterseals. My daughter doesn't have asperger syndrome but she does have sensory processing disorder. Does your son go to school? Who gave the dx? You can go to the local district and work with childfind to get some help. That service is free of charge so do it now. I believe they mostly work with kids who are 4 years old or under. Once they're school age it's a little different. He can start going to a special ed pre-k right now. They are very good. They also have some typical kids in their classes. They open it up and for a fee kids without disabilities can participate. Then your son will be coached in social skills. The classes are small and there are a lot of adults helping. Find other parents whose kids have asperger syndrome. Support groups will help with this. Easterseals will also help. I can't stress Easterseals enough. I just love the head of easterseals autism support here. She's brilliant and funny and works so hard! Nothing ever phases her. Even asperger teens with little impulse control as far as bad language are loved by her. She approaches it all with a sense of humor and flips the bird right back at them. LOL. Anyway, she is happy to help anyone who wants her help and brings a smile to our faces all the time. Her son has moderate autism. She knows what life is like for us. Easterseals holds workshops and support groups. I love them! Miriam > > My little boy was just diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. I'm trying to figure out what the next step is. Guest guest
I would suggest going to the social security ad. they can give you some helpful information. Always check with your insurance company. Some insurance group plans do not cover this at all. I had to work with mine. You can also check with local tharapists, they usually have links for parents. i have to let you know that some places, it may be a long process. My son is ten and I am in AZ. It has taken well over two years and nothing is available close to me. Hope I have been of help to you > > My little boy was just diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome.
