Guest guest
I would recommend RDI training. Relationship Development Intervention. The focus is on how the family can draw out an AS child. We have also gone to family therapy during my husband's lunch from work, but my husband is not really into insight oriented stuff. He has to be told " do this this week, turn off the TV when you eat, talk to your kid " and then have a follow-up as we did in RDI. It would be great if the main caregiver (usually Mom) could get a night off once a week from Dad or a relative. I don't have anyone volunteering for this in our family. I try not to ever over extended myself. It is hard to say " no " to others but at some point you have to or burn out. I hope this is of some help, Pam > > Hi- > I was just wondering how many of you attend a regular support group of some sort. Something geared towards parent training and support and sibling support? > We used to go to weekly behavioral therapy appts but then when my son started school we stopped just because there is no time. he is in school from 8:30 until 3:50 and by the time we walk back from the bus stop it is 4:00 and he needs to unwind. While he plays or does homework- I get dinner ready. We eat early because I have to get my boys to bed very early- by 6:45 or 7:00- my 6 yr old Aspie wakes up at 5:30 or earlier each day no matter what time I put him to bed. > > I would very much like to find a weekly support group for me & my husband and also for all of us as a family. Guest guest
Hello, I've been trying to find a support group for a while now. Where are you from? I've attended CHADD meetings but they are not sufficient for our needs. We were thinking of family therapy, but that is expensive. We need help, our son is also exhausting and straining our family relationship. Guest guest
I'm from San Diego. A while back some people agreed to meet and I was very excited, but it never happened, so I'm starting over. If anyone is in my area, please write me. I would love to talk to someone and share experiences. Guest guest
I like to attend ANGEL Autism, TACA meetings and Family Ties. They have NAMI here but it does not really work for me. I love family ties because they are all parents with children with special needs. It is for families with children with mental ealth concerns but I find 75% have comorbid Aspergers, PDD, HFA Autism, and or ADHD, so we all connect really well. We live in Southern WI. Yu can look any of these groups up online in your area though. From: Cathleen Veloria <cathleen.veloria@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Anyone go to a support group for AS families? Guest guest
Hello Cathleen: Sorry, about that.....I am the one from San Diego who wanted to plan a local support group........I guess I had good intentions but was unable to pull it off......if you have formed a group.....please let me know. I know of one mom on this list who is from Carlsbad and I know another mom at my son's elementary school. Not sure if you have one in place yet...... please let me know your plan. Thanks!
