(02/21/02) by KYW's Walt Hunter A medical provider for Philadelphia police is sounding the alarm about deaths and illnesses among police who all worked at the same facility near Fourth Street and Girard Avenue in Northern Liberties. Officers are trained for attack with knives and guns, but the biggest enemies for police assigned to the former station at Fourth and Girard may have been the building they worked in. Hundreds of officers have received questionnaires seeking detailed information about illnesses they may have suffered while serving in the building between 1985 and 1999. The officers heath care provider became concerned after learning about at least seven cancer deaths among officers. Investigators stress it's too early to determine if there is any cause and effect relationship. However, because the building was torn down by the city almost immediately after officers left it, there's little evidence of what, if any, contaminants may have been inside.
