Guest guest
Hi I am new to the group and have been trying out the GAPS diet for about 2 weeks now and have some questions. 1. I have terrible headaches and nausea and am wondering if it is because of all of the nuts I am eating? I soak the almonds overnight but am concerned because the bread is cooked at 300F that all enzymes are destroyed and it is too much for me? I do just fine eating soaked NT crispy nuts (about 1-2 cup to 1 cup per day) but am wondering if my reaction is caused by eating such a large amount with all of the good enzymes baked out? 2. How were you diagnosed with " leaky gut " ? I am getting serious doubts from my husband and my daughter's teachers about the need for the GAPS diet saying that this is extreme and isn't a NT diet is enough (they think NT is extreme too). I feel that this stems from a leaky gut diagnosis being an assumption and most do not understand/accept the gut brain or health connection. Did anyone have tests done to determine their condition? 3. How do you know when you are done the first step and can move onto the next and incorporate dairy? 4. Is the all grain and complex carb elimination forever? I am not really clear on that PS we made apple cinnamon bread with the bread muffin recipe and it was great for breakfast! Guest guest
Aimee, The headaches and nausea may be dieoff/detox. You may want to try less/no nuts and more easier to digest 'stage 1' foods until this settles down. My daughter's teacher also seemed to think the GAPS diet is a bit crazy, although she didn't say just that. I guess I feel the diet is way healthier than what most kids eat, and what should the teacher care what you feed your kid? I have also had friends act like I am crazy/mean for trying this out. It is upsetting, but I just remind myself that I have to follow my heart and do what I feel is right. And my kids like the foods. Luckily my husband is supportive. The grains aren't eliminated forever, but they aren't re-introduced anytime soon. People talk on the order of 1-2 years... aimee_del wrote: Hi I am new to the group and have been trying out the GAPS diet for about 2 weeks now and have some questions. 1. Guest guest
Aimee, As for question #4...at the recent WAP conference, Dr. Natasha mentioned that her son (who had suffered with autism) was on a school field trip for a week or so. I asked how he could manage the diet and her response indicated that you don't have to do it always and forever. Kathy
Guest guest
Hi Aimee, others have already answered many of your questions. Regarding #2 (diagnosis of leaky gut), in our case my son did have a test that showed leaky gut (called an intestinal permeability test), but I would say that the best way to tell is just by how the person's health is. He's got classic signs: many many food intolerances, skinny as a rail despite eating large quantities, raccoon eyes, asthma, a general allergic disposition.... And I agree that it's hard to fight the mainstream and feel so different from everyone, but when it is something that so clearly could help, my reply is "why wouldn't I do something that could help my child?" Maybe saying something to the doubters like "I love my child too much NOT to do it" would stop them in their tracks. Regarding the dairy reintroduction, Dr. Natasha told me to give all dairy a 4-week break, and then you go through the very gradual reintroduction described in the book (starting with ghee, then butter, etc.). But the book also says that there are some individuals who will not be able to handle dairy. (Sure hoping it's not us!) At the conference, Dr. Natasha said that even when one goes back to a "normal" diet, she is not very big on grains. I got the impression that her own family continues to pretty much eat the GAPS/SCD diet. But it depends how ill one is, starting out. It seems to me that after healing the gut some loosening up of the diet could be okay, but as says, it's a year or two down the road. Good luck, we are only on day two ourselves and it is definitely a commitment.
