Guest guest
Hi, my son took Celexa when he was in 9th and 10th grade. (He's 20 now, in college) He took it for his OCD. This group of meds like Celexa (SSRIs) affect people differently, but Celexa was great for my son, helped his OCD. The only unwanted effect he had was some tiredness, began to nap after school. However since he was just starting the teen years too, wasn't sure if it was *all* due to Celexa, LOL. I recall he at first said he had trouble getting to sleep (we gave it to him at night) but later he said it wasn't a problem anymore. To treat OCD, often have to go to higher doses but that, too, will vary with everyone. He ended up at 50mg, think we later maybe slid back down to 40mg. I'll add that sometimes with OCD, it will increase when first beginning a medication for it; should ease up soon, and that can be a good sign (the OCD increasing) that the medication will work! Also need to give the medication a good 12 week trial after reaching therapeutic dose. Some people see improvement those first weeks, some take longer. (Sigh, never a " one size for all " with meds and reactions, etc!) Hope this helps. I know I was " watchful " when he started, looking for any bad reactions, change in behavior, etc. Went well for us. > > I took my 9 yr old ds to the dev ped last week (first visit) and was given a scrip for Celexa for anxiety and OCD behaviors. After reading on the web, I am concerned about giving it to him since the FDA does not recommend for children. (not that I am a big fan of FDA advice, or a big fan of meds for that matter either) Dr's advise is to try it half dose (5mg) for two weeks and increase to full dose and call if he acts suicidal. Not exactly comforting. > > I find the whole thing a bit disquieting after an hr interview with me and a cursory exam of my ds (no testing) > > Everyone on this site is so great, so I thought I'd ask if any of your kids take this drug. I think I'd feel better about it knowing we weren't alone as I so often do until I read the posts on here and see my life played out in many of your's. >
