Hi, , That is disappointing. Tooth decay is reversible however. If I were you, I would not rush to have his cavities filled. I would postpone it and make some changes to his diet to see if you can get the teeth to remineralize.

Is he getting a cod liver oil supplement? Butter oil? Raw milk? Liver and other organ meats? What kind of toothpaste does he use? I would get him off of anything that contains glycerin. Glycerin puts a coating on the teeth that is hard to wash off -- and it discourages re-mineralization of the teeth. The brand we use is called Tooth Soap by Perfect Prescription -- http://www.perfect-prescription.com/.Ann Marie

,

Xylitol is SCD illegal because it is a sugar that micro-organisms can

use. We can't absorb it, but they can ferment it. That is true of any

of the sugar alcohols (the things that end in -ol).

I was dismayed to find out yesterday that my oldest son, almost

8, has three cavities, two of which are in his permanent 6-year molars.

He was fine 6 months ago at the last dental check-up, so it's really

disappointing. Anyway, I got some Xylitol gum today at Whole Foods,

having read about that being a really good dental health thing, but the

ingredients are (besides the Xylitol): gum base (whatever that is),

natural flavor (spearmint oil), vegetable glycerin, gum arabic

(whatever that is), soy lethicin (yuck), and beeswax.

Does anyone have thoughts about how much of gum one actually

absorbs when chewing? Some of these ingredients are obviously SCD/GAPS

illegal, and I wish I could find a Xylitol product that didn't have

those things, but in the meantime I'd like to try to help his teeth.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Anne Marie,

Is there anything else, other than what you mentioned below, that

needs to be done to help the teeth remineralize?

Thanks for sharing,

Tina

Well I don't know -- I'm still learning. I do believe my teeth are remineralizing. I have been following this diet (raw milk, cod liver oil, etc.) for a few months and my front tooth has filled in a little where there was a crack.

Dr. Price was able to reverse tooth decay in children by adding cod liver oil, butter oil, and one good meal per day (meats, raw milk, cooked vegetables and plenty of butter). Here is some more information -- this was compiled by Rami Nagel who is drawing from Dr. Price's work:

The reason that I am so discouraged is that we already do all these things. My kids have been getting CLO for at least 5 years, and we were doing butter oil regularly too, until we started the GAPS diet a few days ago (we're taking the 4-week break from dairy, so I assume butter oil is out too). We've been consuming raw milk products for the same time period too (but also on hold for now). And we have heart or liver several times a month. And we've been using Tooth Soap for several years!

That is why I was so surprised, because it really seems unfair that with all we do he still could have 3 cavities. His teeth are very weak, I didn't know about WAPF in time...

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions.

I see. You are doing all the right things! Very frustrating!!!I assume you are avoiding white flour and sugar as well. One thing -- are you giving them bone broths daily? If your kids have leaky gut, they are not *absorbing* the nutrients and that is the problem. Which will be remedied with this GAPS diet.

I wonder if Dr. Price's work is available on the internet without a

fee from Dr. Nigel? i am going to look for it when I have a few

minutes.

I've read that there is/may be a connection between cavities and low histamine levels. In my family it plays out - dh has bad allergies and no cavities while I have no (seasonal) allergies and several cavities. Google scholar turns up a couple studies that when people start asthma medication, they get more cavities. According to orthomolecular.org, you would supplement with B vits to increase histamine and Magnesium to lower it. Does anyone else know anything about this? The other thing I saw when I googled was about eating fermentable carbohydrates regularly and not giving the saliva in your mouth a chance to clean your teeth. A 6-hour no-carb gap is supposed to be ideal. All carbs - including things like juice, fruit, sugar and starches all count as fermentable carbs. And drinking lots of water (to wash off your teeth) is very good.
