First death from drug-resistant bacteria

The Asahi Shimbun

NIIGATA-Hospital officials reported Japan's first death attributed to a

powerful, penicillin-resistant bacteria in May 2001.

The death, attributed to a strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria,

occurred at Niigata University Medical Hospital and was the nation's first.

But experts warn that such infections could spread dramatically.

The bacteria, resistant to most known anti-bacterial drugs, does not

normally affect healthy people. But elderly people or those weakened by

other ailments, could contract septicemia and may even die.
