Hi All:Does anyone else use a spin-off of the Would You Rather game to head off meltdowns? I've started using it with both (Asperger's) and (autism) and it's been a great tool. I've lost count of how many meltdowns/panic attacks/obsessive sessions that have been averted. I just have to get better at coming up with creative questions.I'm just wondering if anyone else uses this little technique.Patti

Great idea, I'll have to try that.  I would imagine it helps get their attention, distract them and might also bring some fun into our house! : )On Wed, Dec 15, 2010 at 12:04 PM, PattiAnnB <pabernius@...> wrote:

Hi Patti,

This sounds interesting. I've never heard of the game. How do you use it for

meltdown?

I have used it with my son.  Also at our FNL mentoring sessions with other kids with other issues.  I found one list of questions on Teampedia website under games for small groups.  There are a lot of other game ideas on their too.  I did skip a few questions that were in areas I thought might cause issues.

It's pretty much how it sounds. It's especially good when driving around and the kids are being cranky. It's just a distraction conversation. You come up with various scenarios and make them decide which they like more. My kids ususally like it when one option is really aweful, and one is obviously more fun.

Such as, "Would you rather go to school, or go out for ice cream?", "Would you rather eat a cookie, or kitty food?". "Would you rather go outside in the pouring rain with no coat, or have fun at the beach on a sunny day?"

It gets them thinking of things other then what's making them upset, hyper focused, etc.

___

I use it when my son balks at going to school.  I ask " would you rather go to school or come fishing with me because I am going fishing today? "   He hates fishing so he will always choose school over fishing.  It's funny because that way its his choice to go to school.   (insert evil mom laugh here)
