Guest guest
My grandson is 13 now he is being home bound taught which is sorta a joke because he is so smart he is done in about an hour. He doesnt care about any thing except the computer and will not let us know what he does on it which sounds so stupid since we are suppose to be the adults but they say to pic you fights oh well thought i would say hello you are probally much farther in the knowledge than me so maybe we can help each other i am in kentucky From: Barry LaFond <barry_lafond@...> Sent: Wed, October 28, 2009 12:19:42 PMSubject: ( ) Newbe from Missouri Hi all,Probably should have joined a group like this earlier but...Have an 18 year old son, Josh. Been down the ADHD at 5, Bipolar at 11 and Aspergers at 14 road. He's currently in his senior year at a private school out of state. We don't have much in the way of compassionate therapeutic private schools around here. Our son will finish school with around a 7th grade equivalent education and probably the same in terms of maturity.I've only read a few posts so far, but most of them hit home and sounded very familiar in terms of struggles with homework, "letting off steam at home", etc...Looking forward to getting connected.Barry
Guest guest
Welcom, Barry. Wow - your son is out of state? How it that going? What made you decide to do it? How is he doing?I hope you don't mind my questions. I've never "met" someone who chose htis option. Again welcome. Guest guest
Sounds familiar. My son is smart too, just hasn't absorbed the 3 R's. Abstract thinking is hard, complex tasks are hard. Only give him one thing to do at a time. He's also very bad at standard tests. Too complex, has to concentrate for long periods. Gets bored. He used to be able to quote specs and names of hundreds of Pokemon and Yugioh characters (from cards), yet couldn't tell you 3 things he had learned on any given day.He learns and thinks differently.Hang in there.BarryFrom: shan keith <shannie_k@...> Sent: Wednesday, October 28, 2009 12:32:39 PMSubject: Re: ( ) Newbe from Missouri My grandson is 13 now he is being home bound taught which is sorta a joke because he is so smart he is done in about an hour. Guest guest
Sounds like our 13 year old. Obsessed with computer programming, one hour per day is all it takes for homeschooling, super smart, only cares about computers. We check our sons "history" on the computer to see what he has been up to. Especially good if he doesn't think you are smart enough to do this on a computer. There are also computer monitoring systems you can use. We don't use any filters because my son would obsess on disabiling them for fun... Guest guest
I just gotta add that when our son did school on line, 1-2 hours was all it took with us, too. Then, yes, it was the computer. BUt,,,,,,I think when you look at a normal school day (public)........take away gym, art and music, standing in line, lining up for lunch, sitting around at the end of the day for 1/2 hour (they do this here, anyway) and can play games, read or whatever while the teachers have time to grade things, etc........well, take all that "extra" stuff away, and our kids are/were doing just fine with the schoolwork time. he he. Also,,,,,,,ya know......if I didn't have a household to run......things to clean,,,,,,kids to run after,,,,,,,etc,,,,,I'd do what I LOVE all day, too. hehe. I'd be watching tv nonstop...hehe. So,,,,,,,,,I just wanted to let you know what you're finding out here,,,,,that you are NOT alone. Guest guest
Oh Barry, I had to chuckle at your words about Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon card specs. He he. My son could do this too. It honestly didn't matter which card you brought up......he knew it all. It's been years since he actively has played with them, but when my younger kids get them all out to look at them, etc, he gets right back in there and still knows it all. Guest guest
Thx Robin,Josh is doing well at his school. This is his third and last year. It's been a test, of course. The school uses a token-based system to help teach the kids to stay aware of their behavior 24/7. It took about 9 months for him to "get it" and see that he could make lots of little choices to help himself. Our expectations have changed since he left public school because we understand Josh's disability more and how that's affected him since 5th/6th grade. Basically when the rest of the kids were starting to exercise and mature their complex/abstract thinking, Josh was finding ways to "get by" or cope. Three years later, the school had still not fully understood, recognized and accepted his difficulties to the point of addressing them head-on in his IEP. Wasn't until 9th grade when final exams were administered that it was clear that Josh really wasn't learning. Though he was getting OK grades with homework help from us and a private tutor, he received D's and F's when challenged by finals. We sent him out of state because 1) in-state facilities were highly inadequate. Josh wasn't acting out enough to warrant a "tough house". 2) Midwest facilities/schools just really don't exist that address his specific needs.Education-wise, we're getting honest, straight answers from the school about his abilities, disabilities and have a pretty clear picture of what his initial adult life will be like. There's a ton more to the story, though.... Hope you and your son are doing well.BarryFrom: and/or Robin Lemke <jrisjs@...> Sent: Wednesday, October 28, 2009 12:33:41 PMSubject: Re: ( ) Newbe from Missouri Welcom, Barry. Guest guest
Thanks for the reply, Barry. How "away" from you, is he? How often does he come home or you go there? Is it a specific school for special needs? Is he excited about this being his last year? What's next for him? (Oops....mroe questions......he he) Robin From: Barry LaFond <barry_lafond@ sbcglobal. net>Subject: ( ) Newbe from Missouri Date: Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 11:19 AM Hi all,Probably should have joined a group like this earlier but...Have an 18 year old son, Josh.
