Guest guest
, this was many years ago, but my husband was granted SSDI (I believe he was in CA still) for his severe ADHD (we later found that epilepsy was also a problem, but they didn't know that then). It was a long process with a lot of battles, but his mother got it for him after an initial denial and then eventual approval.... carolyn From: Abatangelo <stephanie.abatangelo@...> Sent: Fri, February 18, 2011 5:10:36 PMSubject: ( ) SSDI in CA Just curious if anyone has applied/been approved for SSDI in California??? Guest guest
We're starting the process in the District of Columbia. Any experience there? My son is becoming increasingly limited in his function due to his anxiety and now that he can't go to school because he was assaulted by his dedicated aide, I may have to leave my job. Thoughts? Guest guest
We not only were approved very disability but for level of care. We make too much to qualify for ssdi so to get her medacaid she had to qualify for the katie beckett waiver. That requires they not only get approved for disability (but are denied based on income) but that you then qualify as instititional level of care (you couldn't be cared for in a home if the parents weren't doing it, ie a foster home but instead would have to be institutionalized. So I would think its easier to just get ssdi. I have heard of many aspies who have it On 2/18/11, EV Downey <dcmusicteacher@...> wrote: > We're starting the process in the District of Columbia. Guest guest
Ok, so not to discourage anyone, I do think you should apply, but you will have to be stubborn to get what you want and deserve..... However, I am going to give a reality check here.... SSDI pays around $800 per mth, and that is if they are not married and it also depends on other things like parents income I think. It was not enough for my husband to survive on before marriage, he depended on his parents to make ends meet..... Medicare comes with SSDI, but only pays 80% of medical costs unless you apply for and receive Medicaid.... Just dont expect the SSDI to pay all the bills.....Sent from my iPadOn Feb 18, 2011, at 8:36 PM, EV Downey <dcmusicteacher@...> wrote: We're starting the process in the District of Columbia. Guest guest
I am confused, did you get disqualified for SSDI or SSI?? SSI is based on income, and SSDI is solely based on disability- although it can be difficult to get that initial acceptance.....Sent from my iPadOn Feb 18, 2011, at 8:58 PM, Durocher <funwith4@...> wrote: We not only were approved very disability but for level of care. Guest guest
i am confused as to which is which but we were told you could only get if youve paid into disability so basically had to be over 18 and previously had a job. the other was for children and permanantly disabled or something. i presume the later is the one you apply for and get labeled but not accepted before you can do a waiver but really i am not sure b/c we didnt apply, we applied for the waiver which forwarded the information to whichever one we needed to be labeled through. Guest guest
it is very confusing.... It is not true, however, that you have to pay in to reconsidered permanently disabled..... My husband probably paid in less than $1000 (in pizza delivery jobs) before he got his disability..... They pulled the money off of his parents records, and can do that as long as the child is not married..... This is all SSDI.... SSI is income based. I encourage you to apply for the SSDI, and fight for what your child deserves. It is usually a bit of a fight, but when you win they will back pay to when the original claim was filed..... Guest guest
My son receives SSI and he is 19. However, we live in Washington, not California. His diagnosis is diagnosis is Asperger’s/ADHD/OCD/ODD. He lives with us but his SSI depends on his income, not ours. If you’re 18 or over, the amount depends on the disabled person’s income, not the parent’s. Apparently, you can get SSI (supplemental social security income) even if you have never worked; it is based solely on disability. If you become disabled after having worked, you get SSDI (social security disability income) and the amount depends on how much you have made previously. My son gets $674/month and that is the maximum you can get in Washington. It is possible to live on that amount if you get subsidized housing. I have a friend who has lived on her SSI income for years, first in Seattle, where she got what they call Section 8 housing, and now in Oklahoma (I’m not sure what they call it there). When he was first approved (which took about 4 months) we had many battles over the money because he kept saying it was his money and he could do whatever he wanted with it. So I was able to become his “representative payee” so that I am the only one who can access the money. ~ Kay
