Guest guest
Welcome. My 11 y/o son was just diagnosed as well. He has issues with math, anxiety and the social setting as well. He prefers to have adult interaction than anything else. Come to think of it, I was the same way as a child and really had a lot of trouble communicating with my peers. I don't have that issue now though. I'm worried about homework and how to help him through school. Our school system is kind of out-dated if you know what I mean so I am concerned that he won't get the help he needs as far as speech/language, etc.It is confusing, isn't it? I bought and borrowed some good books on AS. I would recommend that as well.Hugs,CatFrom: sclem2002 <sclem2002@...>Subject: ( ) New to the AS world...... Date: Saturday, August 14, 2010, 10:35 PM I am the mother of a recently dx child with AS. She is 12 and going into 7th grade. She spent the entire summer being tested and retested and we were just handed this dx Friday. Her doc suggested several sites and said that a support group could possible help me. So here I am.....lost and confused. I work for the school system in our area and she has an established IEP as she has a specific learning disability in math. Her other dx's are ADHD and tourettes. She is not violent and has no temper....her issues are her inability to be social in any enviornment. She chooses to play with much younger kids and has one subject that she talks about. She functions at home very well.....cooks, cleans, helps out anywhere we need her. She just needs several reminders. The only rx she takes is Focalin 15mg (adhd) and Lexapro 10mg (anxiety). She is an average student but I would like more help in the homework area and getting her to turn it in. She has the same teachers that she had last year and if she is promoted she will have them again for 8th grade. So they are very familar with her learning style and issues. Any and all information given would be greatly appreciated.
Guest guest
I'm sorry you're feeling lost and confused, but I'm glad that you have more information about your daughter's situation -- you will be so much better able to help her! I do not have your situation (in terms of your daughter's homework) but a friend of mine had the same issue with her son... turning it in, etc. She worked with the school team to come up with a system, where there was a daily check-off chart that would be initialed by the teacher AND the parent DAILY, and it would be carried back and forth by the kid. So, when the boy was in his class and work was due, the teacher would ask him for the work, and then as part of collecting his work initial the checklist sheet to show she had received it. Then,at home, mom would ask the boy for the sheet to sign it so SHE could see he had turned in his work. She'd initial it. And that way, the next time work was due and the teacher saw the checklist, the teacher would know that the mom had signed off... If either the mom or the teacher saw that the other HAD NOT initialed, it meant that there was a gap in communication and a phone call or email was needed. So the checklist was a way to make sure the teacher and the parent were both checking on the child's turning in work, AND that either would know really fast whether something hadn't been done. It kept communication going between the teacher and parent and prevented lapses from taking place AND it trained the son to just turn work in. I'm making this sound more complicated than it was -- sort of like putting work in one of those interoffice envelopes you need to sign before you pass on. In any event, if organizational stuff and remembering to turn in work are aspects of your son's Aspergers (and probably they are), then they are part of his disability that the IEP can and should address to help him deal with it. You'll come up with something. Diane > > I am the mother of a recently dx child with AS. She is 12 and going into 7th grade.
