Guest guest
Yes he does ( ) Re: My Aspie is Mildly retarded Marcia, To have a diagnosis of Asperger's, it is necessary to be of at least average intelligence. The things you are describing, like the shoe tying, are not caused by intellectual disability. Does your son receive occupational therapy to help him with life skills? It might really help him. Bridget > > I don't post too much because I get easily overwhelmed by all the different postings...I do read them and I have never noticed but is there anyone out there that has a child with Aspergers that is mildly retarded. My son is 13 and makes the honor roll...but can't write or tie his shoes because of low muscle tone. I am a single parent without shared parenting and because of violent behaviors in the past it became a neccesity to have home health care aids in everyday. His negative behaviors have all but stopped and he is a sweetheart and I believe him to have a photogenic memory.. I just don't know what the future holds and I really don't know what to do or any other services I can get to help him. I love this kid more than anything in this world but he is not very motivated when it comes to self care and his fixation is animals.... I wonder if he will ever be able to take care of himself on his own...or should I change my perspective? I am so concerned that he will never have a normal life drive a car have friends...or a girlfriend. Maybe these things are just prayables? Guest guest
The school psychologist said he was mildly retarded...the Autism Clinic behavior MD diagnosed him with Aspergers so he most definitely does have Aspergers. Guest guest
Try to have your son tested privately paying from your pocket, and find out if he is "really" retarded, he might not be and the school psychologist may be wrong. Do not accept just one diagnosis from only one person, have it confirmed by somebody else. I don't know , just a thought. Guest guest
No I will check this out! Thank you. ( ) Re: My Aspie is Mildly retarded Marica - has anyone every mentioned dysgraphia to you since you son still struggles with the physical aspect of writing? Someone finally dx'ed my son with it at age 12 after many years of unsuccessful OT for fine motor skills. Here's a link to learn more about it. http://www.greatschools.org/special-education/LD-ADHD/dysgraphia-learning-disability-writing.gs?content=860 Caroline > > I don't post too much because I get easily overwhelmed by all the different postings...I do read them and I have never noticed but is there anyone out there that has a child with Aspergers that is mildly retarded. Guest guest
because some stupid school psychologist said that after taking the IQ test...but he sounds like alot like your son...and the behaviorist has helped tons with a behavior plan that I strictly enforce and has worked MIRACLES with the violent behavior.. Check with your ccaseworker to see if you can get those services.. ( ) Re: My Aspie is Mildly retarded Marcia, why do you think he is retarded? This sounds a lot like my son, except mine is still horribly violent. My son is in the GATE (gifted and talented ed) program, but he can barely tie his shoes or hold a pencil. He has very poor personal hygiene but some of this may be because he is a 12 yo boy. My son also will have an aide, as of next week. It is called a Therapeutic Behavioral Services Aide. My son does NOT have a photogenic memory. In fact he has serious short term memory loss. But he is still a brilliant and intelligent child. > > I don't post too much because I get easily overwhelmed by all the different postings...I do read them and I have never noticed but is there anyone out there that has a child with Aspergers that is mildly retarded. Guest guest
You know Chelle, you remind me of my mom... I have a lot of learning disabilities and SPD... She never gave up on me and always said I could do anything anyone else could do if I set my mind to it, even if I had to do it in a different way.... She was right, I know have a bachelors degree in nursing and have been a successful nurse for almost 11yrs..... I also score very high on the autism rating scale.....CarolynSent from my iPadOn Mar 4, 2011, at 6:46 PM, "Chelle" <mrathswohl@...> wrote: My son is also super bright, but has a hard time with tying his shoes. Guest guest
Chelle...thank you...I am not real happy with the school right now..or his teacher..this weeks complaint was to keep him home from school for a cough...if his teacher would have read his chart for meds she would have realized he was having an asthma attack! His caseworker and behaviorist are not very happy with the teacher this year.. This supposed IQ test was given last year...I'm going to talk to his autism doc to see what is an appropriate way to IQ test him..
