Hi ,

I imagine there are support groups you can access that are closer to home and may be more meaningful... Here's a possible link, not an endorsement, just pulled it up ...

Good Luck to you... Kate

Hi

I am from Australia. Is there anyone here who lives down under. As much as I enjoy reading everyone's responses some of it goes over my head as we don't have the same services here.

Thank you

Thanks Kate

Unfortunately or fortunately dependant on how you look at it. Aspergers QLD is an advocay organisation which produces newsletters and workshops. I have logged in on an online ADHD group like yours but often the subject is on - you guessed it - ADHD. My son was originally diagnosed with that but has been reassessed as Aspergers with ADHD tendancies. SO I was hoping I can find an online support group for Aspergers. Anyway - I'll keep reading - it's nice to know that I am not the only one going through this. I may be able to learn something that will help me in the day to day caring of my son.

Hi ,

Welcome to the group. We moved from Sydney nearly 3 years ago to live here in

the San Francisco Bay area. I am very sorry to hear that you can't find any

support in Australia.

My son is now 14. He struggled through primary school, we consulted OT's,

psychologists and paediatricians. No diagnosis. " He's bright, he's quirky, he's a

boy, he'll grow out of it " Not very helpful.

Within 5 months of starting middle school here (grade 6), we had a tentative

diagnosis and the school was bending over backwards to help him. It has taken a

couple of years to find the right accommodations and the right meds, but he is

happier and looking forward to starting high school in September.

I honestly don't know what would have happened if we had stayed in Sydney. I do

know that we are very fortunate to be so close to a lot of resources here.

Nothing is perfect, but it is working for us. We have been on a steep learning

curve, IEP meeting, Specail Education terms and conditions. It is all new to us,

and certainly not something we anticipated having to immerse ourselves in!

Have you tried to contact the Children's hospitals in your state for a support

group? Perhaps your paediatrician can point you to one.

It is interesting that Tony Attwood, an Australian, is one of the world's

experts on Aspergers. Perhaps if you visit his website, you may find links to

local groups. I have not visited the site for a while, so I am not sure what you

will find there.

I understand how hard all this can be, especially if you are not in a capital

city. Please feel free to contact me off list if there is anything I can help

you with.

Regards

Kylie

Thanks Kylie ( & a cringe worhty giddaye! Lol)

I live in Melbourne and I have had great support from son's school but am about to relocate onto the other side of Melbourne where I would have to start from scratch. Have managed to locate some support groups but unfortunately can't go to them due to work committmnets which is why I am looking online. I have been onto Tony Attwood sites but I think most of his discussion boards are located in the States so not much relevance there. ANyway I'll continue to plod on - at my son's new school I have been told that they have a few children with Aspergers so maybe once I have settled I'll be able to form a network with some parents.

Thank you again. And best wishes to yourself.
