Guest guest
Does anyone have any books that they would recommend for a 10 year old boy to read? Maybe about being 'different' or just good early teen books? My son is beginning to have a lot more interest in girls so i've been looking for a good puberty book i guess for him to read in case he has anything that he is afraid to ask us about and i'm also looking for books for him to read about it being OK TO BE DIFFERENT...he wants so badly to do what everyone else does or be like everyon else when he doesnt need to! We love him as he is and he'll soon realize his friends will like him as he is and he doesn't need to be fake.
Guest guest
Frindle is a book about a kid who is rather different and always has ideas for things to do that are cool but they often get him into trouble. The author is andrew clements. I think it's about right for 4th and 5th graders. http://www.andrewclements.com/books-frindle.html There are a couple of books with a boy who has asperger syndrome as a main character. The Blue Bottle Mystery and Of Mice and Aliens. They are both mystery books. The Blue Bottle Mystery has the sub plot about the boy finding out he has asperger syndrome. He's always getting into trouble at school but he has a good friend who helps him. Kathy Hoopman wrote a number of books about this same character and a few other books about asperger characters. They might be a bit too easy but they cover the topic of being different. I'm planning to get All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome next. LOVES cats and I know this one will amuse him. I think your son is probably too young for Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. It's about a 15 year old but there is a LOT of inappropriate language and adult themes that might be understood by an older child. Having said that I've been listening to the book on CD with my 9 year old daughter and she loves it. Still, I'm not sure how I feel about her listening to it with me. Mostly, it's okay but, like I said, there is language. Rayleigh is a lot less likely to blurt out bad language than so this helps. It's not like they don't hear it all eventually. Curious Incident is about a boy who is very spectrumy but he's never identified as having autism or asperger syndrome. The author didn't want to be specific. The kid is just someone who is different. He solves a mystery and in solving the mystery he masters some things and overcomes some terrible fears along the way. I'd recommend this more for parents, though. Mr. Poppers Penguins is a fun read. Mr. Popper sure is different. He's wonderfully different. He obsesses about explorers in the south pole and drives his wife a bit crazy. It is definitely a children's book. He writes letters to explorers. During part of the year he is a house painter and then when he can be a house painter he spends his time on his fascination with explorers. Eventually, he ends up with a penguin and I can't remember how that happens but it's a really funny book. Well worth a read. Guest guest
My son is 9, but he loves the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books. The 4th one just came out and he read it right away, and laughed out loud while reading it. He always likes Encyclopedia Brown books too. He likes solving the mysteries, but I think he likes how Encylcopedia always figures out how to outsmart Bugs Meany (the bully) too.I know when my brother was a teenager, he got more into Sci Fi/Fantasy type of books like Lord of the Rings. I'll ask him if he has any other suggestions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Suzanne suzmarkwood@... From: heather <heatherd_2@...>Subject: ( ) Books to recommend for 10 yo boy:?
