Guest guest
Your welcome. I have been on this path for what seems like forever sometimes and others just a few seconds. If you are not happy with the school or his teacher, request an emergency IEP. They don't tell you that you can have as many as needed to resolve the issues. In 5th grade, when they tried to tell me that Lucas was going to need to be held back, we had 5 IEP's. We ended up pulling him out of the main stream educational setting and putting him in an SDC class (Special Day Class). That was one of the hardest choices I ever made, but he finished 5th grade and went on to 6th. In 6th grade, due to the appropriate levels of support, he was on Student Counsel, he got great grades and he learned to be happier in his own skin. He is now in 8th grade, still mostly in an SDC setting, but he is pulling a 3.6 GPA...this is the child who tested at an IQ of 79. Fight for your child, and love them where they are at. Sounds like your doing all you can! We are all here for you. That is why we have this group. Chelle > > > > > > I don't post too much because I get easily overwhelmed by all the different postings...I do read them and I have never noticed but is there anyone out there that has a child with Aspergers that is mildly retarded. My son is 13 and makes the honor roll...but can't write or tie his shoes because of low muscle tone. I am a single parent without shared parenting and because of violent behaviors in the past it became a neccesity to have home health care aids in everyday. His negative behaviors have all but stopped and he is a sweetheart and I believe him to have a photogenic memory.. I just don't know what the future holds and I really don't know what to do or any other services I can get to help him. I love this kid more than anything in this world but he is not very motivated when it comes to self care and his fixation is animals.... I wonder if he will ever be able to take care of himself on his own...or should I change my perspective? I am so concerned that he will never have a normal life drive a car have friends...or a girlfriend. Maybe these things are just prayables? Is there anyone out there that shares this experience? > > > > > > Marcia > > > > > >

Guest guest
Thanks .. Re: ( ) My Aspie is Mildly retarded Hi Marcia, Was your son diagnosed mildly retarded or is this what you are thinking do to his delays? My son with Aspergers has a lot of the same behaviors as your son, my son also did not tie his shoes until 6th grade due to issues with muscle tone. But I would say unless you have an official diagnosis from your child's Doctor, I would not consider your child retarded. He has autism/Aspergers so he has some developmental delays. Hopefully things will come, just not on track like Neuro typical children. I am not sure what services you are set up with now, what state are you in and do you have medical insurance or Medicaid? I am sure if you are able to tell us a little more of what services, etc you are getting now, some of the parents on this list can help you with finding resources and all. Dawn T.
