Self stimming/Perserverative noises. What do they sound like with your child?

Forst can I just say how many times a day I say “stop Zachary”

to my child? And mind you this is me tempering myself not to say it. But my

goodness gracious this child does not EVER be quiet. I think sometimes my head

is going to shoot RIGHT off my shoulders. I never developed the “mother’s

ear”. I cannot tune him out, it is just plain constant!

He does not play, he smashes, bangs throws and makes noises

all the while. He is not imaginary, there is no role playing or stories, it’s

just noises and sounds. Even on the computer he is in constant noise mode.

Just noise, not words. And there’s another thing. He is constantly

making up nonsense words and repeating them.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Hi Denel,Oh my, welcome to my world too - my nearly 8 year old girl does almost the very same things - there are days I think if I hear another sound - ANY sound - I will just jettison off into space from the pressure inside! I have "mother's ear" to a degree but Hannah can get past that without too much trouble. I use my "mother's ear" to determine whether the sounds are "just Hannah" or if they indicate a true crisis of some sort. Something else Hannah does is position her hands like puppets and has them "talk" back and forth to each other but she doesn't verbalize the words - she just sort of hums them out - the weird thing is that many times I can understand what's being hummed - yikes. I've tried ear plugs - didn't work. Hang in there....Becky S. in GeorgiaMom to Hannah

My son is 15 years old. I've read a lot of books about AS and very few have I

found with much about the noises. At first I thought the noises my son makes

were not due to AS but his Psych thinks so. But I'm still learning. He makes a

noise that kindof sounds like a very loud goat. He makes this noise when he is

happy. He uses it randomly and sometimes he uses it in place of words. I will

pick him up from the YMCA and he will get in the car, look at me and make the

goat sound then go on like normal. He also makes a " dohhhhhhh " noise when he

hears something he doesn't like. It's almost like he is saying " don't " . He makes

a " haaaa " sound, (not to be mistaken for " ha, ha " )when someone gets hurt or

makes a mistake. He will also make a loud glupping sound. We call it " the bark. "

He also does what we call " the happy dance. " He will clap and slowly spin in a

circle. He only does this when he is happy.

There is a name for the made up words: neologisms

My son seems to have some of those but we think he picked them up from tv so I'm

not sure. He will say things like " Can I have some toast plox, plox, lotion,

lotion, lotion. "

I hope this helps you. I'm also wondering what other parents think of this

issue.

My son just turned 14 and is the same way as 's son. He will make noices

for noice sake. He hums, makes clicking noices and sometimes randomly blurts out

words or sounds. Sometimes the words are real words and sometimes they are made

up. He will also go through spells where he fixates on a word and he will use it

all the time even if it doesn't apply or he will repeat it over and over because

he likes how it sounds. Right now his word is " epic " . Everything is epic!! Epic,

epic epic, OMG!!

My suggestion is buy yourself an Ipod or MP3 player if you don't already and put

earphones in your ears to tune him out sometimes. You can also use a behavior

chart with rewards/incentives for him to earn depending on how long he can

remain quiet. You could start with one minute then work your way up from there.

??? Just some thoughs, hope it helps.

My 8 year old daughter makes constant noise too. Mostly hers are real words that

she repeats over and over; usually stuff she's picked up from the tv.

Occasionally she makes a sound that almost sounds like a roar. I try to tune it

out and am usually pretty successful, but then there are days where it feels

like I even hear it in my sleep!
