Guest guest
My son as been on risperidone for 3 weeks now, and what I'm seeing is a more aggressive child. He is 9 and has 5 other siblings and is ready and speaks of gouging their eyes out when he gets angry at them, he is grabbing onto the barstools and is acting likes he wants to throw them, but is able to stop himself, and then when the frustration is too much he pulls his hair and starts screaming. We go back to the DR on Wednesday. I'm going to ask for something else as this is just terrible. My son was diagnosed with Aspergers at the end of May and I think I have a long road ahead of me. However, the first time I gave it to him, by the next day, he was a little angel. The change in his behavior was just amazing. So, since the Dr. said we could give it every day, I gave it again to him the second night. And the next day................... again he was so calm, thinking more clearly. less aggression. So I said, Okay, one more night. It was just such a relief to see him happy. I asked him how he was feeling on the meds. He said he didn't feel as anxious, and not as angry, and he did feel better. He said he was having no side effects. Day 3 came............. and that morning he woke up, he looked horrible! I noticed him doing strange things. His eyes were darting around the room, like following something fast that wasn't there. He was anxious, cranky, nervous. We tried to do relaxation. I noticed his arms and legs twitching. I asked why he was doing that. He didn't know he was. So, I took him off the meds. It had only been 3 days, and decided to go back to just " as needed for aggression. " His odd behaviors stopped, and he went back to normal, for him. Then he had another really rough day, a few days later. So I gave him the meds. Keeping in mind that it was only PRN this time! No effect that day. Nothing. But by the next morning, he was back to being much more calm, workable, less anxious. For whatever reason, this med seems to work okay with him, as long as we only use it as needed. But it seems to take an exceptionally long time to work. I can give it to him the afternoon that he is having his emotional problems, and we won't notice any relief for him until the following morning. Can anyone explain that? Does it take that long to work? Why should it take so long, when it's prescribed for aggression and anxiety that he needs relief from SOONER, not later? This is our experience so far with this med. I hope it helps. I'm keeping a log for the Dr so we can see if there really is a pattern, or if this just isn't working for him as well as another might. Best of luck to you, and thanks to all for the warm welcome, Kathy -- www.mousefantravel.com
Guest guest
My son is not as hyper and is not showing ADHD symptoms, so I believe the misdiagnosis for 6 years of ADHD was absurd. I think the psychiatrist treating him now for OCD and the symptoms of autism, not autism but the symptoms, is helping. Yes, he is gaining weight, and I fear that he will get picked on for that. BUT he is starting a private school, so bullying and making fun of people you get demerits for, so maybe he wont get made fun of.I think this psychiatrist is angry that docs are diagnosing patients with ADHD rather than with bipolar these days, since the symptoms can be the same.... but the meds are different and can exacerbate the problems. My son, may very well have bipolar since it is all through his father's side of the family. I may very well contact legal advice on all of this. From: sheridonsmom <sheridonsmom@...> Sent: Sun, July 4, 2010 9:04:39 PMSubject: Re: ( ) Risperidone My son started taking this about two months ago. We have noticed some improvement in his temper outbursts and definitely an increased appetite. I read the info on Risperidone on the website and it says it takes 8 weeks to show improvement! http://www.risperdal.com/faqs_autisticdisorder.html#improvement That seems odd that the Dr would prescribe as needed to me too. Guest guest
Yes, I did several years ago because of tardive dyskinesia. There is a withdrawal period of a few weeks at least where he was worse than baseline before the meds. We ultimately had to go back on an atypical antipsychotic because of the severity of the aggression and behaviors. Started Abilify and this worked without a return of the tardive dyskinesa. I have another relative with mental retardation who has required very high doses of Risperdal for aggression and seems to metabolize it very fast. My son also seems to require very high doses. He is on Abilify 25 mg per day and Risperdal 1 mg per day. Granted, it could be higher but we are trying to get by with as little as possible. The psychiatrist will look at him, look at us, and says "you could always go up." Lol! Guest guest
I agree with . The Psychiatrist doesn't know what he is talking about. I think half of them don't really know any more . All this is very new and confusing and neurological to boot. Abilify helped my daughter who is Aspergers and ADHD I am pretty sure.. but she gained 40 lbs and was diagnosed as almost diabetic and sent to an endocrinologist and put on diabetes meds.. His big idea was diet.. Chicken and fish and veggies, none of which she would eat. So I quit going to that psychiatrist and am looking for a new one. Meanwhile, we discontinued the abilify and she is on a low dose of Topamax and prozac for PMS. She needs something for ADHD desperately. I am going to ask for intuniv and hope my GP will give it to her. She has now lost 25 pounds and her blood sugars are back in order. The abilify was fine for her behavior, but her weight gain was a killer, too. Does anyone know of a parent support group near Melbourne, Florida? > > > > My son saw a new psychiatrist today. He stated that ADHD and Asperger's does not run together, that we need to focus on Asperger's and family history. Since there is bipolar on his father's side, and my son shows anger issues at school and at his dads, PLUS OCD, he put him on .5 Risperidone. He stated it would help with the OCD and the autism. > > > > Has anyone had any luck or thoughts about this medication? The doc seemed to know what he was talking about and was extremely pissed that they have been treating my son for ADHD for 5 yrs with meds that have not been working. > > > > Baer > > >
Guest guest
My son was on Pisperidone for several years. He was placed on in shortly after his diagnosis at 3 yo. (He's 12 now). We took him off of it a little over a year ago since it seemed to not be working anymore. In fact it seemed to make his aggression worse (that's what it was for with my DS. He was about maxed out on dosing anyway. At the end, he was up to 4 mg total a day and the max for him was 6 total. I've never heard that ADHD and AS don't run together. Most of the AS (and other forms of Autism) kids I've seen usually do have some level of ADHD. At least the HF kids I've seen through the years. We had good luck with the Risperidone for several years, my son just " outgrew " it, I guess. It can lead to weight gain, though. For us, though, our son doesn't eat much, so the Risperidone, and the Abilify we replaced the Risperidone with, help him keep a decent weight. Good luck!
