I have a nearly four year old who I believe has aspergers. We are still struggling for the diagnosis. Anyway, we are doing speech therapy and working on several things. We are working on recognizing emotions (frightened, sad, happy, angry faces), speaking in sentences, following directions, asking for things and inside vs. outside vs. whispering voices. I just barely got it approved for her, so she has only been to about 4-5 sessions, but I definitely see an improvement and she is working hard to improve her language skills. If you can afford it, it is beneficial.

Hi There,I have a 3-1/2 year old son with aspergers. We are doing ABA and OT but I'm wondering if I should do speech therapy as well. While my son can communicate well sometimes it's difficult for him to carry a conversation without it relating back to his favorite thing...trains. So I wanted to hear from others who have done speech therapy. Also, my OT mentioned floortime to me and I wandered if anyone has tried that as well and if it worked for your child or not. Thanks,

Hi ,

My son is about 3-1/4 and we do OT and some floortime with a developmental

therapist (she uses a variety of techniques, of which floortime is one). I, in

turn, would be interested to hear about your experiences with ABA, which is not

something that we have used at all. The floortime does seem helpful,

particularly as a chance for my son to express his feelings through play. It

also gives us the chance to practice with toys some of the self-management

techniques that the developmental therapist is trying to teach my son to use in

real life. We do a lot of " do overs " , labeling actions, words, and emotions

(using both PCIT techniques and the Incredible 5 point scale), taking deep

breaths, and more. (As I said, the therapist uses a variety of techniques in

addition to floortime; social stories and picture schedules are among the

others.)

We have not tried speech therapy. My son's expressive and receptive language are

excellent, and while I think his pragmatics could use work, apparently they are

not so far out of the average range that speech therapy is necessary at this

time. Like your son, mine could talk about trains all day. This is a

conversation we had yesterday - Me: " School is canceled today because of the

weather. You are going to be starting your Christmas break today " Son: " I like

the new train track Daddy built yesterday. "

Hope this helps a little, and I would love to hear what you have thought about

ABA!

Your school district should provide the speech therapy. my son started speech

at four and the school district sent a therapist to his preschool. loretta in

Unfortunately I just received the evaluation from her school district and they have rated her as perfectly normal and fine, they say that her developmental delays come from not being around children her age enough..... She stays home with me/her dad. She has fine motor delays (even they documented them) and delayed echolalia, repeats herself over and over again (often), often asks for things in one word requests ("hungry"), and has some sensory issues. I can't get the district to give her the help she needs. We have ARD on 1/7/11 and I will be bringing an advocate and we will insist on an IEE since I believe the district is biased (we have already had a horrible nightmarish issue with them during the evaluation period).

I find it always interesting to see the reasons given for not providing services. But you know, even if she was delayed because she wasn't around other kids (and what a stupid thing to say), she is still delayed. I guess their "logic" is to say once she is around other kids, she will magically be cured. But tons of kids have grown up as only kids in families and still grew up without delays. I would ask them to show you documentation that growing up with mom and dad causes delayed development. Geez, do they think you live in some kind of vacuum without people?

Ugh. Definitely request an IEE at their expense in writing.

From the BBC in the UK:

Might help give you an extra string to your bow... I saved this

because I have lost count of the number of times I have been accused

of this one - the "first time Mum" logic nearly killed our daughter

and the "only child" logic is just as stupid.

Best wishes in your fight,
