We have recently started looking into social skills groups too. In speaking with

the therapists who do them locally, it sounds as if you find one which is run by

an OT or a speech therapist, you may have a shot at being reimbursed by your

insurance company (depending on the coverage they offer for speech/ot of

course). The groups I have found do not bill insurance directly, but if you were

lucky enough to find a social skills group based at a hospital (I have not found

one where I live), maybe they would be able to bill insurance directly under

speech or ot. If your son is already receiving speech or ot services through

insurance, though, you might have to suspend them while he is in the social

skills group, because it would be very difficult to get services paid for 2

different speech pathologists or 2 ots at the same time. HTH.

I paid $100 a session for social skills, fwiw. Ins covered maybe 20%. If you've gotten some positive feedback from other parents, it could be worth a try imo.

Ours are covered as long as we go to someone who is a licensed family therapist.

The 1st group we went to was put on by a bahevior therapist and not cover. Our

mental health is through Cigna.

What state are you in? We just found one (it took A LOT of research!!!) We are in San Diego. It is run by a licensed speech therapist so that might have something to do with it. Also she wanted all or any records, diagnoses, school IEP's to help her case when she calls the insurance company. Let me know if you are in CA.

Be careful if it is through the hospital though. You'll want to check how the hospital bills it to the insurance. For O.T. services at the Children's hospital, outpatient hospital copay cost us $75 instead of the regular office visit copay at a private provider. We learned the hard way....after the bill came after 4 visits. We were stupid and never thought of there being a difference, never thought of checking first.

We are in PA, and Medical Assistance covers ours because our primary Health

insurance specifically will not cover any ASD dx. We go to a center in town

where they specialize in ASD, and they have qualified clinicians running the

groups. They are wonderful!
