Guest guest
Our assessment was just a 1/2 day here. Done privately, not school. But what they needed from me was really his whole history. From birth (yep, with my memory and this was 8th grade for my son!). Developmental milestones, etc. And anything else I could think of, just characteristics that I always felt were on the spectrum, areas that he seemed to struggle with, areas he excelled at.... They had some long form I did and then we went over it and discussed more. They met 1:1 with my son too. NVLD is similar to Aspergers, I was looking at that prior to getting my son evaluated, wondering which fit him best. > > Hello everyone, > > My son, , 14 ½ year old is having his first session of a full developmental assessment on Wednesday. Guest guest
My son had a full neuropsych eval at age 12 via the school. Not sure if it's exactly the same. I had to fill out a long questionnaire about how my son acted at home. I know that his teachers did something similar. The testing took 2 days. I met with the neuropsych doc 1-1 as well for a short bit. It took about 3-4 months before the official report was issued. One suggestion would be to ask the doctor to make recommendations regarding the best learning environment for your son, what supports he needs and what it will take to help him become an independent adult. Guest guest
Eddie, I hope all goes well for you. I found that writing everything down before hand helped me during my son's assessment ( assessed at age 6, diagnosed age 7). For my son, there was so much info that I thought was relevant that I was afraid of forgetting. They will ask about his developmental history - was he on par with his peers for the usual milestones (walking, crawling, first words, etc.) They will ask about his sociability as an infant, toddler, child and now adolescent. They will ask about any quirks that you might have noticed or seen through the years (motor tics, toe walking, repetetive movements, etc). They will ask about his speech - was it delayed? Anything weird/different about it (monotone, talks in a higher/lower pitch, etc)? They will also ask about how your son interacts/has interacted with his peers (does he have reciprocal conversations, or are they one-sided, does he have inappropriate affect (reactions), what type of facial expressions does he have while interacting, does he look people in the eye/face them when talking) They will ask about medical and trauma history, any allergies and any sensory adversions your son may have. They will speak to you in the presence of your son and they will also have 1:1 with you and your son separately. During the 1:1 time during my son's assessment, I asked how they would go about diagnosing him (what methods, measurements they would use). I asked if they would just use the intake as a diagnostic tool or would they include a neuropsych evaluation as well. I asked if there was a positive diagnosis of an ASD, what the next steps would be in terms of treatment (therapy, meds, OT, outside services). I asked them what books, organizations and services (social skills groups, etc) they recommended. I also asked how should I go about notifying the school. That's all I can remember at the moment. If anything else comes to me, I'll contact you. Good Luck! le ( ) Full developmental assessment happening on Wednesday Hello everyone, My son, , 14 ½ year old is having his first session of a full developmental assessment on Wednesday. Guest guest
They will ask you questions and possibly have you fill out some questionaires. Just follow their lead you will be fine. Wish I could say the same for support on this group. Guest guest
hi eddie, my son is 11 now and was dx with adhd/ocd 2 years ago. i knew there had to be more to it but the doctors just wanted to focus on the adhd part. he sees three doctors and none wanted to listen to me. i had to do my own research and speak with a family member who is child therapist who deals mainly with autism. the school was not willing to help either and told me that my child just wanted to cause problems for others. after much fighting he finally got dx with asperbergers and is getting the right help. it is still a struggle each day but now we know. we had to fill out assesment forms to how he is at home anf then his teachers had to fill some out for school. he had to see 2 other therapists and his reg dr.. he was given 2 days worth of computer testing and written tests. it seemed like a never ending process but it does get better and you will be educated and each time you go will be easier. good luck!
