Guest guest
Sandy, I would find a new dr if you can. Most AS kids don't respond well in stimulant meds which are for ADHD symtoms. My son takes stattera and it works well in low doeses. When he was on 60 mg it made him irritable and grouchy. But he takes 25 mg now in the morning and it works. He also takes resperidon and zoloft and I think those actually make the bigger difference with my son. Has your son ever taken resperidon? Based on what your saying it sounds like your son might benifit from it. Just a thought. ne From: boogermeanie@... <boogermeanie@...>Subject: ( ) Does strattera help your child? my son on intuiv now..HELPAspergers Treatment Date: Sunday, February 6, 2011, 12:24 PM My son says the Intuiv makes him "feel weird". He is almost 6 and I'm not sure what that means, but I know it makes him very sleepy and when he gets too sleepy he gets cranky . His impulse control is basically still zero, sadly. So with no intuiv I have a child who would run around the car and jump all day or with he is sleepy, crying and cranky. I tried him on Ritalin and it was all worse, nightmares ( terrors) etc We have done OT for 2 years now, he is a huge sensory overload kid. He is also a spitter when he gets frustrated. Ive tried GABA, DHA, D3, melatonin at night ( does help) . DHA seems to do nothing in my opinion. I guess I really want a way to help him, because his future doesn't look to promising unless I find some help. The doctors locally are just idiots ( "yeah seems he is more than ADD to me".. scratch head scratch head) He was diagnosed in October with aspergers, adhd, sensory issues, low iron, low d3. He also has asthma. To be honest he is driving me crazy... when i took him this past week to the OT he hit walls and the whole time in the waiting room, just kept banging into them, then would hurry under the tables. As I left he refused to get in the car, no matter what I did he just laughed and ran around it. when i took him to pulmonolgy he obsessed about turning water on and off and running out of the room doing a full circle around the doctors exam rooms. So he argues when I tell him anything also, if I go to help him he throws himself on the floor and begins to kick at me. How do you disciple yet still understand its his issue and be understanding, how much should I expect? seems like nothing helps... today he decided to yell at everyone so hub put him in the room and I can hear him destroying it. makes me wonder what will happen when he is 16 not 6... Guest guest
My other son, (non Aspie) was on strattera when he was dxd with ADHD, BEFORE he got the dx he now carries of Bipolar Disorder. Strattera was like a wonder drug at first. It was amazing, but then his mood and tone and facial expressions kept getting darker. I think he was 5 at the time. Then, I found out that with longer term use of strattera, depression can be a factor. He was on strattera for 9 months. Now, my Aspie son just took intuniv for about a month. He had already been depressed, despite being on prozac already. But, the depression got way worse. Dr said that it can make depression worse, so we took him off it. The deep depression (which can manifest as extreme irritability) lifted and that was good. I have heard that kids with Asperger's usually do well on a low dose of an SSRI (commonly used for depression and anxiety disorders) Too much can give an adverse effect called " activation " which basically makes them hyperactive. My son, 12, is on 30 mg of prozac daily. Also, when we started meds, my son, the one with AS, took Buspar 3 times per day. He was probably 5 or 6 at this time. Buspar is an anti-anxiety med that is not a minor (or major) tranquilizer like ativan. Buspar is taken 3x per day. It was amazing for my son. He went from having 3-4 meltdowns a day to having 3-4 meltdowns per month on the Buspar. I feel your frustration. It was not too many years ago I was in your place....then we went through it all again with my other son with Bipolar....and then again, with my third child who has Anxiety Disorder. > > My son says the Intuiv makes him " feel weird " . Guest guest
We've found Strattera to be very helpful for our son who has ADHD - Inattentive type in addition to Aspergers. It's helped him a lot with his problems focusing. His reaction to the other ADHD drugs was very bad. It made his anxiety much worse. Straterra is different from the stimulant drugs like ritalin, so it may be helpful when those more common drugs aren't. A consult with a pediatric psychiatrist would probably be very helpful since it will probably take a few tries to find the your son's best medication(s) and dosage levels.
