Guest guest
Does anyone know of any group outings or activites for those in the Austin, Texas area? Or, is anyone here from Texas? I'm trying to find some things my son can participate in. Thanks! Debbie
Guest guest
I recently met a lady at my church who's raising her grandson (I'll call him "T") and he'd just been diagnosed with Aspergers. Here are the resources I sent her after we talked on the phone for awhile. It includes a couple of local resources here in Austin. Included the rest b/c it's general and might help someone else who's new to the group. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a great, short article about Aspergers written by Tony Atwood, who is well-respected in the Aspergers community: http://www.aspergersyndrome.org/Articles/What-is-Asperger-Syndrome-.aspx Here's the name to the local Meetup group (www.meetup.com) I was talking about: The Austin Asperger's Syndrome Meetup Group We haven't attended any events yet, but it looks pretty good. Seems like a lot of the meetings are up north, but maybe I'm wrong. I mostly pay attention to the meetings for older kids, not younger. Here's a link to the Austin-based organization that provides social skills training for kids. I can't see enough about this organization! They are AMAZING! http://www.spectrumsocial.net/main/ Here's a great link to ideas for building a good sensory diet for T. http://sensorysmarts.com/sensory_diet_activities.html - I totally forgot about this link until I was searching in my saved files for you and I will be rereading this link for new ideas for my son, too! Here's a link to the Austin ISD SCORES program. It hasn't been updated since 2007, but it still looks like a good description of the program. http://www.austinschools.org/scores/index.html It might be tough the next few years, but you will have triumphs and T will start to show signs of improvement if he continues to receive help. It's great to have this diagnosis so early, too. You are doing a lot of the right things. Just remember to adjust your expectations for improvement to some degree. There isn't one intervention that's going to make a permanent change in a quick way. I kept thinking I would see a dramatic difference at some point, but once I realized the changes might be slower than I hoped, things got better. I suspect he was improving all along, but I always wanted more change at a faster rate so maybe I didn't see it. Fourth grade was when things started to click more for me as his mom and what I needed to do to help him and keep my sanity. Hopefully, you'll get there faster than I did b/c you already have a diagnosis. I'll leave you with a link to a great poem. http://www.child-autism-parent-cafe.com/welcome-to-holland.html It's time to check out Holland with your grandson. And like the poem says, it's not Italy, but there are wonderful things about Holland.
