Guest guest
How old is your daughter? If she can ask that question, I think she might be ready for some of Kathy Hoopman books. Here's an amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Kathy-Hoopmann/e/B001JP44WA/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1 and the Lacemaker is one for girls with AS. They aren't picture books but they aren't difficult to read. Most of her books are stories that have asperger kids as main characters. If your daughter is too young for and the Lacemaker then All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome might work better. We have two of these books. One is The Blue Bottle Mystery and the other is Of Mice and Aliens. There is also a book written by a child. http://www.amazon.com/Asperger-Syndrome-Universe-Everything-/dp/185302930\ 0/ref=pd_sim_b_20 There are a number of other books on Amazon but I haven't read them. Asperger's The Universe and Everything didn't work as well for us because there is some religious content. We are atheist. So the boy saying his asperger syndrome came from god didn't really fit for us. We did read it, though. It just wasn't a favorite. Other aspects of the book are great since it is from the POV of a child. Let me know if you get any of these and tell me what you think. Guest guest
How old is she? I would help her see her strenghts first. Things she is good at. And help her see that she likes to study things like a scientist. Help her understand that some kids don't like to study things but like to jump around from thing to thing. A label of AS is not going to help her undertand what that means. Help her understand her own emotions " are you sad, you look sad? " things like that. There is so much to teach, such as body language, use more gestures at home and make it fun. All that said, AS DX is not a secret. I agree that you don't want to make it secret. I would just say that test you took or that doctor said that you are like a scientist and like to study things and that socializing in a group is hard for you. We can help you and we will. Make it hopeful and upbeat. I thought the books about Ramano from Beverly Clearly were very funny and charming and AS like. Ramana misundersnds her teacher in Kindergarten by taking something very literal, she is fasinated with a little girls hair, she likes to break bricks for fun with a hammer, and can't resist touching the curls, she makes shoes out of paper, she gets stuck wanting things a certain way, it is all the funny and charming things about a kid that is a little different. She has her moments of kicking the walls in her room too. I read these books to my daughter from the age of 5-10. We still like them. Guest guest
Hi,Pam...you are a good mom! I also loved reading these books toMaeci and her big sister when they were younger. They are hilarious! My two cents.... I am new to the world of AS as well. I purchased the All Cats Have Asperger;s for my Maeci who is 12 and in 7th grade. She rolled her eyes at me and questioned why I purchased a baby book for her! I left it laying out and knew curiosity would get the best of her. The bookseemed to really help her self esteem and also give her an insight to her world. I ask her if I should donate it to her school and she loved that idea as long as I kept it quiet. I think I will keep it a while and read it over and over again. I have to remind myself daily thatsome of these behaviors are not her fault at all! Hugs,Elinor mom to Maeci learning that PMS and AS do not mix well together! Guest guest
I'm not sure that this is what you are looking for but I have used the following book with DD9 to great success- we pick it up from time to time and work through a new section- it is in workbook format- introduces in different chapters the unique traits of people with Aspergers and is wonderfully positive- the workbook allows them to circle things that they do, add things that aren't in the list etc. The number of times DD has gone through and checked off a bunch of things with a "Yep, yep, that's me" kind of attitude are priceless to me- they affirm her and her likes and dislikes etc. Each chapter also has some very useful ideas for parents and teachers in regards to the topic of choice. There are also illustrations and quotes from people with Asp. which add insight to a wonderfully positive book. Here is the link to the book- I think though I found it on Amazon for a better price... http://store.fhautism.com/p-75-aspergerswhat-does-it-mean-to-me-structured-teaching-ideas-for-home-and-school.aspx Blessings in your search.
