Guest guest
Got a phone call from 14yo Asperger son's social skills/study strategies teacher this am. Says our son is misplaced, doesn't belong in special ed. Giving my husband this scare tactic that our son will receive a special ed diploma from being in this class. I shot her an e-mail back confirming that our son is in the right place, she just is not used to seeing such high functioning autistics. I told her she may have to use totally different techniques with our son than she has ever used before. I told her about how we have an autism person in the special ed department set up to be her " go to " for times like this and I would find out who it was and get back with her. I assured her this happens every year as it takes time to get to know our son's challenges and I didn't mean to be critical. I told her she needs to maybe look at our son's paperwork a little closer; he is definitely not on modified curriculum, has verbal IQ in gifted range and is taking Pre-AP. I copied the SPED director I talk to, a couple of people on the autism team, the school diagnostician. Has anybody else been through this? Any tips? We do go through this every year, but I didn't expect it after the school autism evaluation and the IEP--at least not so fast and so bad. I'm once again coming to the conclusion that we will be battling whether our son's disabilities are real or not until the day he graduates. This is driving me semi-nuts never being able to relax and just live. The minute we get some program or facet of his program " working " someone questions it or refuses to go along. After 14 years of this, I am exhausted.
