Guest guest
I didn't like that word either but my daughter is defiant with me especially and often refuses to go to school. I stopped fighting the label and contacted Yale University. They have an " evidence based program " for dealing with oppostional defiant kids. They agreed to train me and the school on how to work with such a child. Yale is so well known in the mental health professionals noone can argue with their program and it is such a wonderful program of shaping behaviors gradually and positive reinforcement. Yale has a sliding scale. You could find someone locally that is a certified behaviorist. Make sure they are willing to come to the school. If you can't afford these things ask the school to provide a certified behaviorist to write a behavior intervention plan. > 1. What program are your children in? My daughter started out mainstreamed, then I got the AS DX and (third grade) got her into a mainstream classroom with a second special ed teacher. She still has overloaded and too slow to keep up. In forth grade I advocated to get her into a small special ed class for math. She still was too overloaded with all the demands and trying to fit in. In 5th grade she had a breakdown and refused to go to school and after months of therapy and school instruction 1:1 after hours the school agreed with our therapist and helped us get her into a small private school there are only 4-6 kids in a class. Most have reading based LD's but the pace is so much slower she copes better. Oh my daughter has many deficits in slow processing, attention, transitioning etc. It was not for her just a social skill issues. > 2. How do I get them to understand Jakob and AS? We had to find a therapist willing to come into the school at IEP meetings. There was no reasoning with our school. > 3. Should I continue to let him be mainstreamed even if I believe he'd be better off in a very small setting? Some AS kids do well in mainstream settings with support. There are kids in our public school that are doing well. My daughter was so miserable since preschool. She was always very anxious and overwhelemed. If you have at least the IQ tests you can see if on the subscores if there are processing speed issues, working memory deficits if there are look into more testing for executive skill deficits. AS kids that have deficits in cognitive functioning need so much more help then they will ever get in a mainstream setting. best of luck!! Guest guest
The Autistic LD Sped Program sounds interesting. Is that fitting his needs? Really, these programs all get named and one does not mean it's the same as a similar named one in another school system. One time they put my ds into an "LD" class in middle school that I later realized was really a behavior disorder class. It was awful for him and he went downhill fast in it, and we had to get him out of there. I fell for their "LD" language to cover up what it really was. So I think it's more important to visit the class (I hadn't that particular time!) and get an impression as to how they do things and what they teach, how they teach, etc. Match it to what your ds needs. It's weird to me that the Behavior disorder people would call kids "defiant" because it would seem they would be trained to evaluate behavior based on the message and need it is telling us vs. just calling the kid a "brat" and treating them as if they are naughty. I would question the credentials of those people. In the special "LD" class that my ds was in, surrounded by the worst behavior problems in the school, the teacher told me that while he had autism, when he was misbehaving in her class, it wasn't due to his autism, he was just being obnoxious. lol. I said, "You mean, he can take his autism off when ever he feels like annoying you?" and she said "YES!" lol. Well, she was never his teacher again after that. But that is the attitude of some people. They don't realize how often behavior is really a way of speaking. Roxanna "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." E. Burke ( ) Questions about Puplic School..... Hey everyone, I have a questions for those of you with children in elementary school. My son Jakob is in the Autstic LD Special Ed Program with Inclusion. He was in the Behavioral Service Program. I had him changed because I didn't think they were dealing with the real issue. They always say he is "defiant", I hate that word, its just a fancy way of saying your child is BAD! Which I do not believe he is bad, I believe he was BORED! I asked them "well, what program are the other AS children in?" Yeah, they just looked at me. The BSP teacher told the Autistic Specialist that she never saw one trait of AS in Jakob. I asked her if she had and M.D. folowing her last name! I do not think they believe me even though the doctors have sent them a full evaluation, etc.. Sorry about the spill. My questions are: 1. What program are your children in? 2. How do I get them to understand Jakob and AS? 3. Should I continue to let him be mainstreamed even if I believe he'd be better off in a very small setting? Thanks for all your support and helping to ease our minds!
Guest guest
Hmmmm. sounds a bit familiar... First of all...if he is being "defiant" they need to call a meeting and find out why!!!!...it is call a FBA...Functional Behavior Assessment....they need to figure out the short term triggers and and long term...they need to come up with a BEHAVIOR PLAN. SEcond....and this is from my experience only.....my son was placed in smaller Sped classes and guess what...his behavior became WORSE! He acted out...he fell asleep in class...ended up spitting in a girls hair (all this was in 6th grade). We ended up with a FBA. A behavior plan was put in place...and we moved him into Inclusion Classes for math and English....guess what...his behavior IMPROVED. He was no longer around kids that had a lot of behavior problems....he was in classes that moved faster...and was not as Bored... I had my son put in the sped classes thinking it would be better for him...smaller classes, less stress....etc. but it was the worst year he had (6th grade). He is now in 8th...in all inclusion classes...with accommodations...and even though he doesn't get all A's...he is passing everything...and he doesn'teven study or apply himself.....can you imagine the grades he would get if he did! It has been a struggle for me...as i was an honors student...loved school...did well. I have to keep reminding myself...he is not me. And, I have learned to accept a 75....or 80 .... He is in a special reading program... Reading...and has come a long long way...he can read...he can understand...and he is smart...just in another way.... Today school is so different...today's world is so different...all the electronics...computers ...etc. Our techy age has changed everything and the amount of stress on our children is so much greater today...with t.v. and computers ...the stress to be "hip", "cool" "fashionable", "sexy" "beautiful" "fit" has changed our world. Kids today are bombarded by commercials every moment...and the stress to be social is so intense...it has taken over... Today in math...they don't teach times tables...why...because we have calculators...everywhere...on ipods, phones, computers and calculators themselves...they stress more on solving the problems and not on why it works this way or that...today they are not taught to think for themselves but how to use a calculator. I was in an algebra class...they were using graphing calculators...they had to find out the slope of the problems.....I did it in my head...and all the kids looked at me and said...Ms. R...where is your calculator...I said in my head...lol.... Well, enough of this cause I could go on and on and on...it just floors me....we are teaching our children to be dummies who can solve problems on calculators but have no idea what it means. They are not taught to figure things out on their own or how to solve problems in life...scary is all i can say...scary jan <font face="arial black" color="#bf00bf">Janice Rushen</font> <font face="Arial Black" color="#bf00bf"></font> & nbsp; <em><font face="Arial Black" color="#7f007f">"I will try to be open to all avenues of wisdom and hope"</font></em> From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...> Sent: Sun, February 28, 2010 9:32:29 AMSubject: Re: ( ) Questions about Puplic School.....
