Guest guest
I think Body Ecology follows the specific carbohydrate diet, is that right? GAPS refines the diet a bit more.On Nov 11, 2009, at 4:43 AM, maryjos wrote: I am waiting for my Body Ecology Book to come in the mail, but in the meantime I found Gaps. Guest guest
Hi jo, I have both the BED book and GAPS book and I believe they are both on the right track...they both aim to heal the gut and fight candida which in turn corrects other problems in the body. There are slight differences which I feel will suit one person but not another. For example BED says No to all fruit, except for lemons in the beginning, whereas GAPS says if there is no diarrhoe fruit is ok. BED says certain grains are fine - 4 of them - whereas GAPS says no grains until much later...The BED is very much centred around probiotic foods, vegetables and bone broth supplemented with grain and meats. Full GAPS allows a greater flexibility with other foods than BED - so it would depend on how severe your situation is. Personally I stick strictly to the things they are both in harmony with and then experiment with the things that one will say is ok and see how that fits with me - Donna honours the principle of uniquenes. When I first started I couldn't take any of the 4 grains that BED allows. After a few months I experimented and found Quinoa ok, then Amaranth a bit later. I still can't tolerate Buckwheat (it is the most acidic of the 4 grains. I guess what I am trying to say is that they are both great protocols and both have great success with healing so test the waters and see what suits yourself the best. See which you feel the most comfortable with and start with that - you can adjust as you go along, discovering which foods sit the best. Hope this helps a little - step by step Louise > > > I am waiting for my Body Ecology Book to come in the mail, but in > > the meantime I found Gaps. > > > > I saw both the authors in their videos on Youtube and was thinking > > they are pretty much the same. > > > > It seems most of you are on the Gaps Plan. Guest guest
I did SCD with my son and quit after about 6 months. I followed it to the letter. My son is so severely autistic, I am afraid I may not be able to tell what is bothering him. He will not be able to communicate anything to me. He is never bloated, always has formed stools, never has rashes or behavior issues. Maybe the BED would be better because of all the probiotics. Thank you for your response. jo > > > > > I am waiting for my Body Ecology Book to come in the mail, but in > > > the meantime I found Gaps. > > > > > > I saw both the authors in their videos on Youtube and was thinking > > > they are pretty much the same. > > > > > > It seems most of you are on the Gaps Plan. Guest guest
Dr. Natasha -McBride has a 70% cure rate for her autism patients on the GAPS diet, plus supplements. She has said 100% can be cured if treatment begins before age 5. Cutting out dairy and gluten seem to be key since if the big proteins aren't digested properly they will go into the blood stream and into the brain. It takes months to clear these proteins from the brain; it took about 6 months before I saw big changes in my son (he had mild symptoms of autism but severe sensory integration dysfunction). I found gluten to be tricky to avoid since it hides in so many things (soy sauce, baking powder) but if GAPS is followed closely than it's straightforward to avoid it.Formed stools is good but the definition of formed is important. So is coloration and whether the stool sinks. The GAPS website actually has a cartoon diagram of what a healthy formed stool should look like.Probiotics are important, as are the oils.Good luck.On Nov 12, 2009, at 7:44 AM, maryjos wrote: I did SCD with my son and quit after about 6 months. Guest guest
Wow, those are amazing healing rates! The only thing I have heard with the GAPS is that some need to maybe rotate some of the foods sometimes or their kids develop allergies? Just to not eat the same thing day after day after day? Not sure what there is to this, but other than that I agree that GAPS would be best since it was created with autism in mind. Dr. -McBride has a son who was autistic that was basically cured due to her own research etc. as she is both a medical doctor specializing in Neurology and holds a PhD in Nutrition, I believe. I’m sure you have found the http://gapsdiet.com/ site by now, but I think on there some doctors are listed as well? Too, I wonder if there are perhaps some support networks for people in your situation? I really just pray that this does great things for your son, Jo. I am so excited to hear how it goes. How old is he, by the way? Oh, not sure if you feel that there is any chance that immunizations may have at all played a role in this with your son, but I have heard of something called chelation therapy that can remove heavy metals too (mercury) which I definitely would speak with a doc. Specializing in this sort of thing before trying anything like that as I believe that the process alsos remove minerals from the body, which could be dangerous in a young boy? Though, you can do a search on this as I know they sell pills to do this. Guest guest
Oh, don’t do the chelation. Apparently it is not recommended. She says that if you have a good gut then it will fight the mercury itself? http://www.carlazeiteraba.com/gapsdiet.html From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of maryjos Sent: Thursday, November 12, 2009 4:54 PM Subject: [ ] Re: Gaps vs. Body Ecology Thank you for your information. Guest guest
They both are great. What is the issue you are dealing with, not sure which would be best for you, what is at stake? The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is part of the GAPS protocol, so you may want to read "Breaking the Vicious Cycle," for more info on that (google for good websites too). Basically, only carbohydrates with a single molecule (no complex carbo chains) are allowed. They don't have to be broken down (easy to digest and absorb) and no partial molecules are leftover (to leak thru the gut or feed nasty 'bad critters' in the gut). The bad news is that there may not be the perfect right or wrong diet, healing can be a long uphill battle, with lots of changes. The good news is starting a good nutrient dense, healing diet is a great start. Dr. McBride is a PhD in neurology and PhD in nutrition, so she understands brain chemistry and nutrition interaction well. Both advocate unprocessed foods. If it was a food available 200 years ago, it might be OK. Both advocate fermented foods. GAPS advocates juicing for detox. Guest guest
It also said something that she said about apple cider vinegar/baking soda (aluminum free I imagine) in baths to help kids detox as well? Anyone tried this? From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of us Sent: Thursday, November 12, 2009 8:18 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Re: Gaps vs. Body Ecology Yes, I believe rotating the diet is helpful. Especially since it's a no grain diet, nuts will be a big part of the GAPS diet. I was making everything from Bob's Red Mill almond meal but recently found pecan flour sold by kingarthurflour.com I also discovered that the shipping was the same whether I bought 1 lb. or 4 lbs. so it's cheaper to buy 4 lbs. at one time. I also found a food co-op, Azure Standard, that sells bulk almond flour. I paid about $100 for 50 lbs. of almond meal; the same amount from Whole Foods would be about $250. So, if Azure Standard delivers to your area, I recommend them. The cookbook Nourishing Traditions is also very helpful for understanding nutrition and how and why foods should be prepared certain ways. Dr. Cambell-McBride does not recommend chelation therapy. There's a section on it in her book; she does recommend raw vegetable juices for detoxification. This was very helpful for my son. I would go with a lab test to see if heavy metals are even an issue. There's a urine test available. On Nov 12, 2009, at 4:18 PM, Head wrote: Wow, those are amazing healing rates!
