Guest guest
Doc switched my son (8) from Intuniv to Abilify. He was too tired and had headaches on the Intuniv. He has also tried Clonidine.....same thing. 1st tried Concerta but had to stop as he developed facial tics. They then tried Strattera but he still had the tics. The plan is to try Abilify in hopes this will stop the tics and possibly help some of his behavior. If it helps the tics but he still needs help with behavior, the doc said he can then add a stimulant. Looking for thoughts/opinions on Abilify. We are only a week in to school and it has been a rough start. He usually starts out ok, then it goes down hill, so this worries me a bit. He really seems depressed and angry....I feel this comes from being socially frustrated with his peers. Thanks so much!!!
Guest guest
My son did well on Abilify along with Adderall XR. His DR. has now switched the Abilify to Invega. This has brought out a whole new tic of constantly blinking his eyes and saying they don't close. I wish he would have stayed on the Abilify. His tics were less and he seememd to handle it well. School starts for us on 9/1. The DR. is lowering the dosage on the Invega to see if that helps. Guest guest
My ds is now 17 and his Dr. put him on Abilify approx. 4 months ago for his behavior. The major side effect that I have noticed, is he has gained a lot of weight. He has put on about twenty five pounds. I have also noticed an increase for sugary foods/drinks. Especially since his Dr. raised the dosage. I have read a lot of posts about this medication causing these symptoms and this is beginning to really worry me. He is doing fine on the medicine though. His behavior really has changed, although he hasn't been in school for the past couple of months, I would like to see how he is on the higher dose while in class. He has an appt. soon & I'm going to bring up these issues with her when we see her. ..:~Anita~:.
Guest guest
Anita – Abilify was a wonder drug for my son. But, he gained a huge amount of weight and we also saw a craving for sugary foods and drinks and almost an obsession with food – he was always hungry. He also developed Metabolic Syndrome which can be a precursor to diabetes and had to take Glucophage; he also had high cholesterol and triclyceride levels requiring meds. He was on it for several years. Last year we tried to change from Abilify to Geodon without success. In May, we switched from Abilify to Intuniv and he has lost about 40 pounds since then; we have also noticed a decrease in appetite. We thought there was also less craving for sugar but we are getting reports from the people that are working with him on independent living skills that they are seeing the sugar craving and all the problems that come with that. We have adjusted the Intuniv a couple of times with some improvement but I am not sure we have it right yet. Even though Abilify was one of the most successful meds he has ever been on we really don’t want to go there again due to the weight and medical problems it caused. Sigh. Guest guest
I'm with . My then 7 year old gained 15 lbs in 8 months. We've also switched to Intuniv, and she has probably lost all 15 (and probably a few more) in the last 4 months. Our psychiatrist was really concerned with making her an obese child due to Abilify. It did work pretty well...but the weight gain brought more negatives than her positive response to the med. ---- Elgamal <cindyelgamal@...> wrote: > Anita - Abilify was a wonder drug for my son. Guest guest
I have already told our story, but my daughter had almost the exact same experience as the below son of ... gained 45 lbs on Abilify, became prediabetic, taking Metformin, she had high cholesterol, etc. I took off of it against doctors recommendation since it did help her (at low levels.) They kept increasing it as her behavior returned to problematic. Every 5 mg =10 pounds.. Now she is on Intuniv. She has lost 35 pounds and that is good, but now she won't eat. Also a problem due to her hypoglycemia. Behavior is borderline on this. Guest guest
How is the abilify working/the start to school going? My ds is 13 yo (hfa) and we did try abilify. It did work ok but not enough for my ds's needs. He was a lot calmer but he was still very depressed and would start crying about his miserable life. So we had to go back to the med doc. I actually do not even remember it was working at all until we took him off of it. Then it was like, "OMG!" because things were a lot worse. But we did switch to something else that worked. We had to find something else and I kept wishing we'd go back to abilify because while it didn't help enough, it helped some. However, we did find something that worked eventually. On a funny note, my ds had watched (memorized) the abilify commercials and the last time we saw his med doc to discuss a new med, he started repeating the commericial to the doc about how he needed to combine abilify with an anti-depression med. I had no idea he paid that much attention to the commercial until that moment. Never boring. Guest guest
My son (13) was switched from Respiradon to Ambilify and it worked great with the Zoloft he was already on. But he started gaining so much weight that I asked the doc to take him off. He switched him to topamax and it has made him worse so called doc today and he said to stop it. Now he is just on Stratera and Zoloft. Another wait and see. The respiradon did work when he was on it just not as good as the Ambilify. Hope it helps your son. Roxanna, That's funny what you said about your son memorizing the commercial. My son likes to memorize the commercials where you can get stuff for "just 19.95!". If it were up to him we'd have everything from sham wows to coin collections. :)ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Abilify Date: Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 8:37 AM How is the abilify working/the start to school going? Guest guest
I have an 18 year old that has been on Abilify for 6 months. He was having rages, self injury and aggression. My husband was ready to get him out of the house. The behaviors are under control but he has anxiety that is awful. He has to take Klonopin for the anxiety and I feel that there has to be a better solution than this. Â D. Â From: lauriemagic@... <lauriemagic@...> Subject: Re: Abilify Date: Friday, January 7, 2011, 10:45 AM Â Thank you for the best answer. That is the advice I would give anyone in my shoes. But I have had him with homeopathy for 13 years now and it has made a huge difference in our lives. I think he would have been institutionalized (or maybe I would have been) if it were not for the help of homeopathy. But it is not a total cure for everything, I still have major anger issues. He is developmentally delayed and does not process information well. He is also somewhat paranoid. But I do thank you for your thought. After the psychiatrist on Wed we went to the Homeopath on Thurs. But I was wondering if abilify had been used by anyone to good effect. Thanks
