Guest guest
Hi Donna,I also started the diet with my 3 year old (he's now six) who wouldn't drink water. Will your son drink juice? On the GAPS diet, freshly pressed juices are allowed and I've found them to be very healing for the gut. It does require borrowing a friend's juicer or buying one (I borrowed an Omega juicer). You want a juicer that squeezes the juice out; not one that chops and then spins the juice out. The juices should be half fruit and then half vegetable juice. I found a successful mix is half apple then I add carrot, beet, celery, cucumber. If your son can help make the juice he will likely be very excited about drinking it. You don't want to make a lot of juice because it's best to drink it on an empty stomach within 1/2 hour of making it (this is when the enzymes are active in the juice; the juice will be full of vitamins too that are rapidly absorbed on an empty stomach). The juice should help with constipation. If your son can't swallow pills yet, you can mix the Bio-Kult probiotic into the juice.I feel a rotation diet is very important, even on the GAPS diet. I found when I only used almond flour for the nut based breads and muffins then my son became sensitive to almonds. If I rotated using pecan, cashew and almond then he was fine and I saw greater healing. This diet has been very healing for my son but I did find that it is necessary to go completely grain-free, dairy-free. I tried doing a soft version of the diet (I allowed rice and millet) and didn't see much healing. Once I eliminated grains, the real healing began.I am now reintroducing dairy on the schedule specified in the book but I only use raw dairy from grass-fed cows. I found that cows fed grain cause allergy reactions in my son, stuffy nose and sneezing (plus the grain isn't good for the cows anyway and those cows produce a lesser quality milk). The bone broths are extremely important for healing. I can't get my son to drink a cup at every meal but he will eat broth based soups, chili and stews so I serve them as often as possible. I found that making the bone broth in slow cooker was the easiest way to do it and I also learned through my son's pediatrician to let the broth cook for much longer than is recommended in the GAPS book. I put 2 chicken legs cut in half (to expose the marrow in the bone) with 2 chicken feet (gross, I know, but you get used to it) in the slow cooker. Fill with water and add 1 tablespoon Celtic Sea Salt (not traditional table salt). Turn slow cooker to high, when the water boils (this will take several hours), turn it down to low. After an hour or so, remove the meat from the bones and put the bones back into the slow cooker. You can use the meat on top of salad or in soup. Leave the slow cooker on for about 24hours total. This will give a really nutrient dense broth, full of trace minerals which are important to gut healing. My son used to have a pasty white skin but I literally see color come into his cheeks when he eats this broth. You can freeze the broth. I usually freeze it in glass pyrex containers in 2-cup aliquots. If you don't freeze it, it will keep in your refrigerator for 4-5 days. Chicken broth is probably the easiest to make but I also make beef and pork from pastured animals (avoid bones from animals that are not allowed to pasture). If you can't find chicken feet, don't worry just use the legs. The chicken feet will make the broth more gelatinous (when cold). The more gelatin, the more quickly the gut heals. The diet can seem overwhelming at first so introduce it a little bit at a time until you're totally on it.Best of luck.On Dec 17, 2010, at 2:46 AM, Donna Lees wrote: Greetings everyone! She didn't think gluten was the problem and said to start him on oat milk. He drinks this now with honey added. I found her good on some things, vague on others. She didn't feel that a rotation diet was necessary at all, but the more I read the more I decided that was what we would do. After much work, I established a four day rotation diet. I went to visit a local dietician to make sure was receiving the right nutrition with what I had done. She totally disagreed with IgG testing (and I know she isn't the only one), the diet I had planned. and the diagnosis of leaky gut. She said that there only way to deal with food intolerances and that was with the low chemical, fail safe elimination diet. So, with prayer and pondering I decided that I was still leaning toward the leaky gut diagnosis and started reading up on the GAPS diet. I bought the book a couple of years ago but I haven't finished reading it. I have also recently looked at the Brimeyer website. isn't on a rotation diet at the moment but is on rice, soy, wheat and dairy free. We have lots going on at the moment and I am not quite in a position to jump into a new diet (I'll be doing it too), but I am will be willing to make the commitment when the time comes. I am not sure what is the best treatment or method to go with and I was wondering if anyone could pass me their advice or have tried this with a small child. I see that water consumption is so important for healing leaky gut but I can't get him to have it. I've tried. He's a determined 3 year old. Need I say more? Any help, stories or advice would be so appreicated. Thank you in advance. Guest guest
Hello Donna, I was wondering if you ever tried probodics and enzymes (broad range). My son has some very serious problems after dealing with aseptic meningitis this summer. He has suffered from seizures for 9 long years but after getting the meningitis he started fainting (horrible drop episodes). We took cream/butter out of diet and started probodics and enzymes and the episodes have went down by 95%. We still have some work to do...but we are figuring out that he has leaky gut/digestive problems. I just wish we could find a doctor that understands and can help us out. My son is violently now reacting to any supplements....coconut flour...tea...and lemon water. As long as he just eats broth/meat and little veggies and just water he is seizure free. This is very hard for a 13 year old. I am learning about ENZYMES.....and they are simply amazing. It seems about every health problem is usually a missing enzyme in your body that if you supplement problem can go away. Just wish I would have learned long before this Debbi > > Greetings everyone! Guest guest
Debbi,Can you point me to more information on enzymes? My son has eosinophilic esophagitis, which is a severe form of food allergy. Because he is allergic to most items on the GAPS diet, we have only been able to follow a modified form, but it's helped him a lot. I've always stayed away from enzymes because it's difficult to know their ingredients - or they are made from beef or corn, which are both very bad for my son. But I'd love to know more and perhaps find one that could be helpful to my son. Much thanks! On Wed, Dec 22, 2010 at 6:20 AM, Debbi <debbisprang@...> wrote: Hello Donna, I was wondering if you ever tried probodics and enzymes (broad range). Guest guest
Hello! Here is the enzymes he is taking is Rain Rock Nutrition-Omnizyme Forte (I order them at Long Life Unlimited 1877 433-3962 www.longlifeunlimited.com He also takes Dr. Ohhira's Probiotics (also get at longlifeunlimited). I have done lots of googles on ezymes. There is some wonderful sites that breaks down enzymes ...what you can be deficient in to cause this health condition, etc. I currently am reading a book by Dr. Loomis which is very interesting. The enzymes he is taking costs about $68. for 200 tablets. Barb Long that I buy them from took them when she had cancer. They had only gave her 2 years and that has been over 23 years ago. Any other question just email me Debbi dsprang@... > > > > > > Greetings everyone! My name is Donna and I live in Australia. Guest guest
and Debbie, thank you so much for your responses. Sorry I haven't thanked you sooner. , you have given me some great information, thank you. I will be digesting it over the next few days. I may post some questions later if that is okay. Debbie, hi! I have had on probiotics for some time. I tried him with enzymes when he first started eating and he had a vomiting with it so I haven't tried again. Probably just out of habit I haven't looked into it again, so thanks for the little push!! Thanks again so much, Donna Greetings everyone! My name is Donna and I live in Australia.
