Guest guest
Greetings everyone! My name is Donna and I live in Australia. I have a 3 year old boy who was diagnosed with leaky gut a few weeks ago, and I just wonder if anyone can give me any advice on doing GAPS or other treatment for a young child (who does not drink water no matter what!!) My gorgeous boy's name is . After he was born he required a four hour bowel operation. We didn't get him home til he was six weeks old, with a nasogatric tube in.He had 3 weeks of IV antibiotics during his stay which I think really began his bowel problems, but he has had other health issues as well. I expressed for months as we established breastfeeding full time. has Down Syndrome and his low tone meant it was a lot of work getting him to breastfeed. has had trouble with chronic snuffly noses, difficult sleeping, reflux, constipation. He does not settle well to sleep and is a light sleeper. He had a sleep study this year but that did not show any obstrucive apnoea. We have done supplements with since he was 6 months old. He breastfed until he was about 20 months. We did GFCF diet a couple of times. At times this showed improvement in his nasal congestion and not at others (due to his DS he has very small nasal anatomy anyway). Dairy always caused reflux. We had been on a GFCF diet for some months this year, when I finally found a family doctor who did nutritional and envinroment medicine. IgG tests found very strong reactions to various foods. IgA tests (RAST) were negative. A hair mineral analysis showed various things including extremely high levels of tin (we have contaminated spring water we have since found), The doctor we saw recommended diet be free of rice, soy, wheat, dairy. She recommended increasing zinc for gut healing. She also had other recommendations for detox. was only drinking rice milk at the time (he won't touch water or juice). She didn't think gluten was the problem and said to start him on oat milk. He drinks this now with honey added. I found her good on some things, vague on others. She didn't feel that a rotation diet was necessary at all, but the more I read the more I decided that was what we would do. After much work, I established a four day rotation diet. I went to visit a local dietician to make sure was receiving the right nutrition with what I had done. She totally disagreed with IgG testing (and I know she isn't the only one), the diet I had planned. and the diagnosis of leaky gut. She said that there only way to deal with food intolerances and that was with the low chemical, fail safe elimination diet. So, with prayer and pondering I decided that I was still leaning toward the leaky gut diagnosis and started reading up on the GAPS diet. I bought the book a couple of years ago but I haven't finished reading it. I have also recently looked at the Brimeyer website. isn't on a rotation diet at the moment but is on rice, soy, wheat and dairy free. We have lots going on at the moment and I am not quite in a position to jump into a new diet (I'll be doing it too), but I am will be willing to make the commitment when the time comes. I am not sure what is the best treatment or method to go with and I was wondering if anyone could pass me their advice or have tried this with a small child. I see that water consumption is so important for healing leaky gut but I can't get him to have it. I've tried. He's a determined 3 year old. Need I say more? Any help, stories or advice would be so appreicated. Thank you in advance.
