Guest guest
I am reading " The Explosive Child " - for parenting children that are inflexible and easily frustrated. Often their parents are too. Might help with understanding and to try a different approach Miranda > > > > > > > Be true to yourself, it's the only person worth doing it for........... Guest guest
Some of the AS kids that are more controlling types (vs. passive) can be really really difficult to manage. So I wouldn't get too down on yourself. You are probably doing all you can with little support. One piece of advice I will pass on is this, do not engage in discussions trying to reason with your child when they are upset or mad. It will reinforce this unwanted behavior (arguing). If he won't do as you ask you have to figure out a simple reward system and reward all wanted behaviors. For example he gets to school on time he gets 1 hour of TV/computer. Summer is a good time to make behavior changes. I have found the Yale Parent and Child Conduct Clinic very helpful. I took a parent course and have stayed on for parenting support. It has not really reduced meltdowns but I don't feel so frustrated with behaviors. They teach you how to parent very ridgid thinkers. I did all the training on the phone ($75 a week). Or if you have medical insurance, it may be possible to find a neuropyschologist (I did find one in Aetna) that can give you parenting advice for the price of your co-pay. A neuropsychologist will probably understand the cognitive issues. That has been my experience. Some kids need some medication, that is why I have asked the question myself. take care, Pam > > > > > > > Be true to yourself, it's the only person worth doing it for........... Guest guest
I have been in the position of loosing it many times with my 4 and 10 year old (both high functioning). My husband tells me I yell too much but it gets SO frustrating when the meltdowns happen about everything. We don't have bad days like that all the time but A LOT! My 10 year old gets mad anytime he's asked to do anything he doesn't want to do and my 4 year old is so hyper that its hard to get him to follow any direction like when I tell him to get in the car. Trust me, you are definitly not alone. My 4 year old seems to have more meltdown and screaming fits in the car, does anyone have any advise on how to deal with that? I'm wondering if there's something about being in the car that's causing him to go into sensory overload?? My sister watches him during the day and has seen/heard some of the behavors and states that he doesn't act that way at her house. I'm starting to feel like maybe its something about me that causes the sensory overload with him and the meltdowns to occur!!! I really hope that's not the case but its so overwhelming at times I just don't know what else to think. Guest guest
Have you tried playing a DVD while in the car? This has really really helped us. We have tried having pillows to hold, playing calming music, having something to munch on, having a few toys in the car, but for us having our daughter watch DVDs has been an excellent distraction. Guest guest
Pam, Lots of parents take something for anxiety and stress. I never use to go near any medications, but sometimes the stress is so great I NEED SOMETHING to help me stay a bit calmer with this constant nerve wracking situation. Just a suggestion,WilmaPS Being in the car and stores is horrible here. It's sensory overload, in addition to constant car sickness. Getting a car with a TV helped a lot. They have some at Target that you can hang over the back of the driver or passenger seat. Hope this helps. Hang in there sweetie!!!WilmaOn Jun 25, 2010, at 8:33 AM, Pamela wrote: Have you tried playing a DVD while in the car? This has really really helped us. Guest guest
not for " aspergers " for symptoms, so if your child has symptoms that are very bothersome and they are adhd like they may try adhd meds, if they are meltdowns/mood related they may try a mood stabilizer, depression type they would try anti depressants, etc. My dd is on non stimulant adhd meds and a mood stabilizer. There are a lot of studies on supplements for aspergers though On Fri, Jun 25, 2010 at 9:30 PM, Rita Barber <ritabrbr@...> wrote: Is there any kind of medication for aspergers?
