Guest guest
Your son sounds almost identical to my 10 year old son who was diagnosed with Aspergers over 3 years ago. Some of these behaviors you mention are more than ADHDm agreed. I would take him for further evaluation if it was me. > > my 11 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD A FEW years ago however the more I watch him and talk to others I think it may not be adhd at all but his symptoms are more similar to aspergers. He doesnt like being around crowds middle school has been very hard he is unorganized. He does not make eye contact, he will just suddenly start rubbing the side of his heaD. or hitting his chest. he has put sores all over his face picking at it. He makes these sudden loud outburst daily. eveything is taken very seriously. he is failing all of his classes His meap and IQ test tested above average. Again his test scores do not match what he is doing on his daily work. He has no confidence although he is very smart and beautiful. When having a conversation with him, most of the time it's like talking to another adult or at least an older teenager, other times hes more like other 11 yearsold and sometimes its like talking to someone much younger. I know from > conversations with him that he is capablecof so much more. he still has not learned to tie his shoes, he rode his bike only a few years ago and proper hygeine is very hard to get him to do(brushing teeth, deodrant, using soap when showering, and even changing his clothes) He will often even have trouble buttoning and zipping his pants I have given up on putting belts on him. I am not surer what is going on. All nI know is that it hurts so bad that he thinks so little of himself. He has no friends and has very violent outburst at his sister. Loud noise bothers him if his sister even makes a sound he will start screaming and yelling at her please any advice would be greatly appreciated >
Guest guest
Hi , Well,,,,,,I'm no doctor.....but I'd say that you need to get another eval from maybe a Pediatric Psych. Or anyone who knows about AS. I'd say TOTALLY AS. Everything you've mentioned screams it, in my opinion. Also,,,,,,,with AS, there are always other dx's.....like ADHD, Tourettes, BP, depression, anxiety, etc. So.......although ADHD may have "fit" him when he was dx'd, sometimes growing older makes the symptoms even more obvious. Anyway, welcome and hugs. Guest guest
PS. The picking of the skin is tied to anxiety too. Poor kid is really suffering. Hopefully an anti-depressant will help. Guest guest
Hi , I too have an 11 y/o son with the exact same issues. He was dx ADHD in 4th grade, and then just this past May with AS. He is very smart in school, but has a lot of behavior problems and social awkwardness, having no friends. He also picks at his skin like that, we carry bandaids around because he always picks open a scab and is bleeding. His high anxiety level is a symptom of AS also, and he has no self-esteem. Also, the sudden loud outbursts have happened with my son in school, and he is very serious...takes everything very literally. We had him privately evaluated, and then contacted the school to set up an IEP to help him in school. He goes to social skills groups, a psychologist, and OT outside of school also. I think you are right, and you should have further testing done. Best of luck to you! > > my 11 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD A FEW years ago however the more I watch him and talk to others I think it may not be adhd at all but his symptoms are more similar to aspergers. Guest guest
I have a 7 year old son diagnosed with ADHD at 5, but as he gets older, we noticed that there is way more going on, deeper than what was hastily diagnosed. Issues like yours (except the eye contact) is similiar to us. I kept at it and finally a pdc diagnosed him with Pervasive Develpmental Disorder. I asked about Aspergers' (mother's intuition), but he wouldn't go that far at this time. It's very frustrating, because he is not getting proper help because everyone wants to stop at the ADHD, when so much more is going on. Our son not only can't ride a bike, but has no motivation to learn the things his 5 yr old sister already can do. Just to let you know you are not alone. I'm still trying to find answers also, this is a great group of people, someone will have your answers!!
