Guest guest
Does he have a Aspergers diagnosis? If so, why are they hesitant to eval him for an IEP? He is entitled to it. Demand it. Is he seeing any outside professionals for help? Therapist? Psychologist etc? Get them involved - they can help offer recommendations. For the IEP I would think about requesting shorter school days. Just an idea if the anxiety is that extreme. I've heard of that being granted before. I would start digging really deep to try to figure out why he is so stressed? What is causing his anxiety? Is it the classroom environment? His classmates? His teacher? The load bearing school work that is required of him? And then try to come up with solutions to help eliminate his stress to those things. But the IEP evaluations should help uncover these issues as well. Medication should not be the only answer (I say that to the school, not to you) They need to provide him with solutions regardless of the fact if he is on meds or not. Maybe he needs time away from class to meet with the school counselor. Maybe they can create a buddy system for lunch or recess. Maybe he needs an aide? Less work expectations. These are all possibilites. Good luck!
