potty trained, the others weren't. I also babysittit autistic kids, and

their not potty trained yet.

Thanks Pat! It has been one of those weeks, and I am wondering if I have

done the right thing in bringing Mark home from the group home he was in for

7 months. He is a total 1:1 child and is alot of work. I have a hard time

scheduling time for my 9 yr old daughter.

Hi ,

You're not alone. My son is 8 and is no where near able to be potty trained.

We still bathe and dress him and we usually have to finish feeding him his

meals. He only recently started to attempt to feed himself. There are times

that I feel that I'm stupid too because I don't know how to teach in a

way he would understand. This past weekend we had a break through of sorts.

Many times I tried to teach how to put in and reject a tape in the VCR.

He'd have us put in hundreds a day. For some reason, this weekend it clicked

for him and he now operates the VCR. Sometimes, he has trouble, but mostly

always he gets it going. Since we did this he has decided to try to operate

the DVD player, which is a no-no. For that, he's have to be able to read. Not

all DVD's load the same way. I find him with the DVD in the closed slot and

its waiting for him to select an option for play. I have to give him a lot of

credit for trying to operate it.

Jeannie, you are not the only one. is 9 and is not potty trained, and

she cannot bathe or dress herself, despite our best efforts. She is also

supervised constantly, both at home and at school. I understand how you feel

and I'm sure you are doing your very best with Mark. <<<<<<<hugs>>>>>>>,

Hi...sorry, you didn't sign your post, so I don't know who you are!

is almost 14 yrs. and I have been saying all along that there is no

way to toilet train him unless he can communicate; which he can't. At least

not overtly. All these years the schools have been doing the toilet

thing....they take him to the bathroom, sit him on the toilet, and then put a

diaper back on him. I have thought it is pretty much a waste of time.

However.......his last IEP (9/00), we had a Behavioral Psychologist that was

really into sensory issues and trying to help come up with a plan for

to decrease some of his more aggressive behaviors. Basically, she thought he

needed to be kept really busy with sensory integration exercises. We decided

on toileting as a base activity so his aide takes him to the toilet every

hour and then they do various personal hygiene activities (washing hands,

lotion, combing/brushing hair, etc.) She suggested that he not sit on the

toilet for very long and that he have a book, music or some other activity to

do while he was there. He had a real aversion to sitting on the toilet

because he has " withholding " behaviors...but that's another story. LOL.

Anyway, when he's done on the toilet, they might use lotion with rice in it

on his hands, or a loofa (sp?) or something that will give him SI input.

Well, this routine keeps and his aide very busy (ha!) during the his

school day. I suggested that I would send " pull ups " so that it would be a

more " normal " experience. It was September when we started. I have been

noticing over the past few weeks that was dry between g-tube feedings

(a dramatic change) maybe for 4 -5 hours. Then over the past few days I have

noticed that he makes a noise...sort of a half-grunt/half-shout kind of thing

when he's been dry for a long time. I started taking him to the toilet when

he did that and he urinated in the toilet almost as soon as I sat him down!!

I have to say that he has been pretty darn consistent with this! We still

have a long ways to go....he WILL NOT defecate in the toilet.....and he won't

go to the bathroom door if he has to pee. But I am encouraged for sure!

Maybe it would work for ? Seems like it might be worth a try. Hope

that gives you some ideas.

Marla,

I wish I had some advice on toilet trainning. I don't have any children

because I'm young, but I wish that I could help in your situration. So far

the only autistic boy that I babysatt for was potty trained and all the

other autistic kids that I babysitt arn't potty trianed and are still in

pull ups and diapers. The kid that is potty trianed, I don't know how he

got potty trained. Their this 12 year old twin boy, and one of the twins is

almost potty trined. His mom said that he would point to his pants, or

bring his mom a clean diaper to change him. But other then that I don't

know what to say.

As in what way, do you need ideas? What have you tried, i found when

scanning through some older issues of exceptional parent magazine, a good

article on toilet training, i can scan it and email it to your address

personally. shawna.

Hi Irma,

I've been following your posts about 's success with toilet

training. Congratulations to both him & you! Could you explain the plastic

curtain part? Do you mean a shower curtain & how do you use it. Our

is 13 & is what we call schedule trained. If we put her on the

toilet every 2 hrs., she voids & keeps her pull-up dry. This works great at

school. On week-ends we sometimes lose track of time & she has accidents or

she takes her pants off to indicate that she needs to go. She does have a

toilet sign, but doesn't use it consistently & if we're not looking when

she's signing..... During the summer Steph hates to wear her pull-up - it

must get awfully hot - she's always stripping! I'm thinking of trying her

with real panties, so I'd love any help you could give, even if it's just

moral support. By the way, Steph is menstruating now, so that adds another

dimension to the whole picture. Thanks.

---Hi , . Having a daughter would be an extra challenge in

the toilet training routine . Wish I had an answer . But , your

daughter sounds like she too is doing good on her toilet training .

The curtain liner is used at home wherever he sits to protect the

carpet and furniture . I'm just glad he does not mind it , if his

behavior was aggressive , there was no way I could of worked on the

toilet training . It all takes time , notice how long its taking us

to learn about our kids with special needs on toilet training . I

almost gave up . I still need to get with his doctor to rule out any

medical problems because he still has alot of over-flows . I hope you

got a hold of the book on Toilet Training by Wheeler, that Joan

was offering . The Contents : 1. The importance of Toilet Training.

2. Determining Readiness . 3. Developing a Toilet Routine . 4 .

Dressing for the Occasion . 5. Habit Training . 6. Teaching

Continence . 7. Communicating the Need to use the toilet . 8. When

Toilet Training is successful . 9. Toileting in Unfamiliar

Environments . 10. Night time Training . 11. Support Strategies .

12 . Common Problems ( and Solutions ) Associated with Toilet

Training Persons with Autism . Until next time , Good Luck .

pees in toilet 99% of the time but his still often bms in his pants

or all over, about 10-30%of the time, and he has been smearing bm in his

underwear or pull-up for ages they keep saying hes constipated but i think

there is something else going on, he knows how to bmin toilet, and knows he

is to bm in toilet, you can even ask him he will say or sign " nathan poopoo

in toilet " but i think it just slips out he doenst grunt or push or anything

as one does during a bm, and he oftne will deny that he has gone in his

pants if has. GI is suppose to be setting up an appt for our may ones at

UIHC next month, maybe they can help. shawna.
