My son didn't wear jeans until he was 12. Still hates underwear but I have to remind him that he's in HS now and needs to change in gym sometimes (Which he hates doing in a crowdedm, stinky locker room). Also hates socks and rarely wears them (only in gym class, again)....and we live in WI.

He'll wear shorts year-round...........and he's actually cut the sides of his tennies to make more room for his feet as they've grown. Once he finds a good pair, the idea of getting a new pair is not thrilling to him......

Sigh.......

Does he have sensory issues? It might be hard for him to find clothes that feel okay on his skin. My son would not wear jeans at all last winter because he said they were too scratchy. We went shoe shopping this weekend too, and our biggest problem was getting my son to wear socks to try on the shoes (he hates socks, but will need them to play outside at preschool when the weather gets cold).Bridget>> My boyfriend son 14 yrs old taking him shopping is so stressful take like 3 days to find sneakers and jeans a whole day. is this common for as child takes him half hour to try on 1 pair of jeans.>

Hi, I am new to group and new to AS. You are not alone at all. My 12 y.o. daughter is the exact same way with socks. She has to wear leggings/jeggings b/c they are stretchy and feel good. Don't know what I am going to do when cooler weather comes in and she has to wear enclosed shoes/boots. She does not like the confinement of the shoes/socks on her feet. I have the same exact hygienic problems as you do. I am starting her with atherapist to see if this helps at all. I had a great IEP meeting this a.m! Maeci wanted to sit in and I let her. She is having a great school year so far. She is making all A's in all her subjects. I am just thrilled for her! I have such a problem with her doing her homework at home. All her classroom teachers have volunteered to keep her after school 3 days a week to help her with it!

I was just blown away with all the support! I hope Maeci continues to have good days for when she has a good day it is a memorable day. : )Elinor From: KylieM <kyliemonty@...> Sent: Wed, September 8, 2010 11:17:34 AMSubject: ( ) Re: back too school shopping

My son, 14, won't part with his shoes until they are so worn and falling apart, or way too small and causing pain. Socks have been an ongoing hassle for many years. NO seams allowed. Underwear, we have had to chase down a particular style of Hanes, with Comfy waist band.

Geting him to part with outgrown clothes is a major project too.

On another thread on hygeine, I can only say" Me too!" My son's dentist and orthodontist have lectured, nagged, threatened, all to no avail.

We have had a minor win on soap and deodorant. The Old Spice guy is so charming and convincing, my son WANTS to smell like him!

It is good to know that I am not alone.

Kylie.

Wow! This sounds so familiar! My dd can't stand blue jeans and being barefoot, etc. It extremely difficult to find clothes she can/will wear. Then there is the problem that the leggings she would always wear are made of cotton/spandex and shrink, so I buy larger ones and they never shrink the 'right' way. Everything seems to bother her bottom, so she prefers dresses but can't wear them for phy ed and when it's cold outside, etc. It gets rough...lots of wasted money on things she decides she won't/can't wear, because she can't stand how it feels--even if it's an awesome outfit she loves. Sigh. --Kari

Mine cannot wear underware because they cut into her leg but she is open to wearing "boy short" style underware which are like boxers but for girls...no shoulder seams so the shirts have to be big enough so the seams hang off her shoulders, she has to be able to put her chin to her chest so hoodies are out and she will stretch her collars in order to be able to do this...or she will just cut "v"s in her shirts with her scissors. She hates to shop so trying on clothes is a definite No so we never know if the outfit will pass muster until it is put on to be worn that day and of it doesn;t feel right oof it goes and back tot he store for a return....urgh...

Oh, I hear you. My son is that way to an extent. He is fussy with socks and underwear. He never wears sweats and his jeans can not be tight. I have to wash every things and use tons of softner so that they don't itch. I have so many socks I could have opened a store. Shorts have to be the loose basketball type. And no embroidery or such on shirts. No collars or buttons..they drive him nuts. This year we didn't shop...except for new sneakers and one new tee shirt. He doesn't wear long sleeves or sweaters. I am praying his pants still fit from last year. I think they will ...he thinned out and got taller...
